For VLC player; make a new folder by the name of “subtitles” in the same folder of your movie. Then place your .SRT file in that new folder. Make sure that the name of the movie .AVI and the name of the subtitle .SRT are the same. e.g. for eragon.avi, the subtitle file should be eragon.srt. reply

Use VLC. To use an .srt file, you need to open VLC, and from the file menu, click 'open file'

Vlc will then bring up a new screen with two boxes on it, on eto locate the file you wish to open, and the second to use an external subs file - browse to the subtitles (.srt, for example), and then click ok to open the movie. works like a charm.

(You have to check the 'use a subtitles file' checkbox before VLC will let you specify a subs file.) reply

Viz of movie name is 123.avi,then subtitle filename should be 123.srt

I am on SUSE 10.2. Have VLC, MPlayer and Caffeine installed. The problem is that while VLC does not display srt subs, the other players are very erratic with this feature. Do I have any alternatives? reply

just in case anyone else needs this info, SCREW all the info above, far too much like hard work. All you need is one file, called Crystal Player. Plays avi’s and the srt’s on top, no ajusting timing or any other malarky, brilliant!! all that vob stuff is waste of time.
Happy film watching..... reply

no entries here for awhile, so I don’t now if anyone’s still looking here... but...

I have a problem where one particular movie (.avi) will not play at all with the .srt file. If I remove or rename the .srt file, the movie plays fine (without subs of course) - as soon as I put the .srt file back, the movie opens up in media player, but absolutely nothing happens...!

my other movies work fine with subs - just this one movie - and i’ve downloaded several .srt files and a couple different versions of the .avi file too.

any suggestions...?

thx reply

ok for example,

u have a movie called spiderman2, and the file is called spiderman2.avi What u have to do now is to rename the .srt (subtitle file) to spiderman2.avi Which means, you will now have 2 files of the same name in the same folder. Now the subs will automatically load reply
