thanks for this important tip, i had the same problem for many months now.
every player starts and looks fine, but only plays audio.
it’s really the problem with the display settings of the graphics card. with some tests with primary, secondary and on/off, i could figure out to get video playing again.
Had the same problem after I switched video cards.
Had an PCI ATI ALL-IN-WONDER and an AGP NVidia GF2.
Switched in a dual head GF 6600 GT.
Tried CCCP, no help, tried reinstalling divx (brought back audio), tried reinstalling WMP11 for codecs, nothing.
Tried reinstalling NV drivers, no help.
Finally, I reinstalled the directx drivers, which finally got it.
OMG TY Lee been trying to figure this out for ages my laptop screen went out and i went out and bought a monitor as a cheap temp fix i couldnt figure out why the hell my media players wernt playing but i did what u said and it works MAJOR PROPS!!!!

I was having the same problem.
I solved it by doing this:
NVidia Geforce7300 GT on “full screen video controls” - It was disable for some reason.. - choosed “Primary display adapter” - apply
Guys, i also have/had this problem
No video but sound is fine, happens with all my playback programs, VLC, Winamp, Divx Player, WMP 11...
Its a VISTA problem, as it seems to work fine on my winxp pro install.
However, i did get it to work in vista with VLC.
Thanks to the following forum thread, read > learn > and be happy :)
thanks a lot, your ATI workaround works just like a charm.
I’ve been messing with video overlay lately since I got me a now PCTV card, and when I checked out, video overlay settings were in “custom”. Just reseted them to “Home” now. :]
i dont have any of that Ati stuff.
i just downloaded a .torrent from the internet.
used utorrent to make it a .avi file.
then opened my .avi file on windows media player
and there was sound, but no video
