MTS/M2TS file

What is MTS/M2TS file?
The MTS/M2TS file type is primarily associated with AVCHD, a high-definition digital video format that supports 1080i and 720p with a reasonably small file size, which has been jointly developed by Sony and Panasonic. When we’re talking about the AVCHD, there is no difference between the mts and m2ts files except other than the filename. We even can rename one to each other. You may also have noticed that the files on camcorder or files dragged from camcorder to PC are .MTS extension. However, if you use Pixela or PMB to import/copy them to PC, those files will have extension .M2TS. Exactly, they are identical.

How can we play MTS/M2TS files in AVCHD format?
AVCHD files are based on the MPEG4 CODEC, can be burned to Blu-ray discs and played in compatible devices, such as Blu-ray disc players and the Sony PlayStation3. Also, the files can be played back directly from a camcorder on an HD television set, through HDMI or component-video cable. On a computer, the files can be played from the camcorder connected via USB as an external storage device, or from removable media or from the computer’s internal hard disk drive. Presently, the default media players from Apple (QuickTime) will not play AVCHD natively.
Do we have a simple way to play MTS/M2TS files in AVCHD format on computer and Multimedia Player Device? Well,
various video programs can edit or convert this file format to AVI, WMV, MOV, MP4 for playback of multimedia player device, like iSharesoft MTS Video Converter, HandBrake, etc. I tried the two programs and it seems iSharesoft MTS Video Converter is the most easy-to-use for me, and I would like to write it about to share with you:

To convert MTS/M2TS files for playback on your multimedia player device, you need to download and install iSharesoft MTS Video Converter. Also, you have to understand which kind of format videos your device supports. If you have no idea about it, you can choose the device pre-set in the program and see which format it supports. Let’s know more now.

Step 1. Download and install iSharesoft MTS Video Converter.
Step 2. Add files. Click Add File(s) button on the toolbar, select video or audio files you want to convert in the dialog box that opens, and add them into the file list.
Step3. Select output format. Choose one or more files in the file list, and open Profile drop-down list, then select an output format for selected files. You can also set different formats for different files.
Step 4. Set output folder and convert file
Click Browse button in the settings panel, select a destination folder in the dialog box that opens, and click OK. After finishing the above settings, check the files needed to convert in the file list, and click Convert .
Until now, you can transfer the file to your multimedia player or drag it on to your video player on computer and enjoy the movie. reply

I wanted to convert the MTS files for editing purposes as working with raw MTS files is too slow. The Pavtube MTS Convertedr software was very easy to use and I had no issues with converting my files. The speed and quality was fine for my purposes. reply

When I was looking for a fast m2ts joiner, I find Aunsoft MTS/M2TS Converter. However, when I have a further look at the official site, I notice that there is another powerful m2ts joiner named Final Mate, which offers the function to merge m2ts files into m2ts file without re-encoding. Comparing to the free m2ts joiner like txmuser, Aunsof Final Mate includes the automatic joining function while importing video clips.

Here is my experience with Aunsoft Final Mate to automatically merge m2ts files and the steps to merge AVCHD files from different folders with lossless output.

Automatically merge m2ts files into one movie.
Aunsoft Final Mate, as a fast m2ts joiner, will help you combine and merge m2ts files from PC or camcorder while importing to the program under the following conditions:
1. The .m2ts files that needed to be combined and merged are located in the same folder on computer or camcorder.
2. The .m2ts files are recorded with the same recording mode, or with at least the video codec, resolution (width x height) and video frame rate.
- For videos from camcorder, just follow the camcorder wizard or click the Camcorder button to create movie with files in same format.
- For videos from computer, just click the Import button and browse the m2ts files from computer folder.
The automatic m2ts joiner on PC will display each movie with the same format for separate movie ID.

To merge m2ts files from different folder on PC.
Just follow the step above to import the videos from a folder, and then choose File > Add Files to browse the video clips. By default, the first movie is selected and display on timeline.
- If the first movie is the one you want to add .m2ts video clips, go to the Files tab, click on the video clip and drag to the timeline with the position you want.
- If the first movie is not the one you want to add additional m2ts files, double click on the movie ID under the Movies tab, and then go to the Files tab to drag and drop .m2ts files to timeline.

Export M2TS without conversion.
After arranging the AVCHD .m2ts files, just click the Export button under the preview window, and you will face the window to export .m2ts file with lossless output. Click the OK button to start merging m2ts video clips into one m2ts file as output without re-encoding.

Please note that the m2ts files with different parameter settings in frame rate or video codec will be exported as separate movies. What you see on Aunsoft Final Mate with different movie ID is what you get in output. reply
