Hi! The KMPlayer can play .mod files. ;) (I don’t know that it was here or not before i add) And if i well know, you can download this program (The KMPlayer) free. reply

ok it is a mafia!! ok there is not such a program os way of hacking this (.mod) files and the reason its because since (mod) file ware created they ware ment to be like that so people could not use this mod in video editing software such as adobe premiere pro or after effects unless you buy them and even buying this expensive software does not guarantee the quality or anything so thank you very little to the creator of (.mod) files this files suck!!! reply

When you simply change the file extension, you can lose file information. This is why your video quality is bad or you lose audio. Converting the file type with a converter program (such as the ones listed in previous posts) will preserve more of your video quality. reply

Agree. Simply change the file extension will not actually help. There are many third party applications that will do the conversion job. You may give it a try. What I used is one called Video Converter, you may give it a try. Download at:http://www.video-dvd-converter.net/video-converter/index.html
Good luck! reply

Hi there, this is all very helpful, but does anyone know a free program to convert files that are of a length of around 20mins?? Seems all the programs I have found only convert for free if the video clip is shorter than 5mins?

Would really appreciate some advice, thanks so much reply

You can use Format Factory (A FREE audio, video and picture file format converter). This worked well for me. It will convert any and all formats of files including .MOD. Just go here to download it.

Hope this helps. reply

Oh, I forgot something. Some of the files I converted with Format Factory were over 30 minutes long but I don’t know if it had a limit on the file size or video length.

Here is a little more info on where to download this:

YouTube/lockergnome has a video describing this program as well, if you want to review it before downloading. Here is the link for the video.

I have had the same problem but instead of converting the files I downloaded Acecodecs megapack which allows you to view almost any file extension in their media player classic. It worked for me. Hope this helps. reply

Hey, I just installed WMP classic and it seems to play the .MOD files fine, but when I compare it to the file on the video camera, I discover that there’s 7 minutes missing. There’s no difference at the beginning of the file. I tried changing the extension to mpeg, but that doesn’t help. Converting does help, but as I have many files I need to watch I was hoping there’s another way. Anyone any ideas? reply

If You’re in windows you can rename a file with these steps:
1. Open the explorer window where your files exist
2. Select the Tools >> Folder Options menu item
3. Click the View Tab
4. Uncheck the option to “Hide extensions for known file types”
5. Click “apply to All Folders if you always want to see the file extensions for every file no matter what folder you are in
6. Click ok to accept all changes and close the dialog window
7. You should now see all the file extensions of the files in the current folder
8. Right click on a filename you wish to change and select Rename
9. Rename the file extension to anything you’d like.

Once you’ve done this, you can just right click a file and rename it in seconds. No software required!

THIS WORKS!!! Thank you so much! reply

Hi I just downloaded Prism Video Converter program in my computer. Then opened the program. From the top menue I added the mod files or MPG-2 files which were invisible in windows movie maker. Then I selected the file within Prism Video coverter and click the button “Convert”. The program converted the files in .wmv format and I could view the files in Windows movie maker for editing. reply
