Download Nero Info Tool from here
Unzip it, put a blank disc in the drive and run it. Look under the disc tab. Does it detect the type of media? Under the drive tab, what are the listed read and write capabilities of the drive? Also at the upper-right, what is the exact model of the drive?
If everything seems to check out except the ability to read the media, first check the manual what the read and burn capabilities are (DVD+R vs. DVD-R; older drives could only burn one but not the other). There may also be a section that lists recommended brands of media. Try a disc of that brand. Lastly you can check for firmware upgrades for your drive. And if the drive seems to have been used a lot, you can also try a CD/DVD lens cleaning kit. reply
