I would LOVE some help with this problem. I’m trying to play a video file (with a codec called CRAM) on my mac and get the following error:
The movie could not be opened. Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error -1.)
The files run on a PC and ON EVERYONE ELSES MAC!!! For a couple of years these files ran on my mac also, but one day stopped and I have no idea why.
Here’s the details:
Mac running 10.5.6. Quicktime Pro 7.6. Perian 1.1.3 and Flip4Mac 2.2.1.11 are installed. Also will not open with newest WMP on my computer.
It will open with VLC, but because of the number of files I need to work with, transcoding each file into an MPEG-4 would be too cumbersome.
The file is “avi”.
HELP!
Thanks so much for any help.
CRAM = “Microsoft Video 1” (that’s the name of the codec)
Your post made me do some testing and I found out VLC added CRAM support at some point (it didn’t use to play CRAM on either the Mac or PC version - circa version 0.8).
Google unearthed this post http://trac.perian.org/ticket/96 which could be relevant, and suggests that certain Perian setups can break CRAM playback in QuickTime. So one try would be to uninstall Perian momentarily, or perhaps upgrade to a newer version.
One last possibility is Apple dropped CRAM support (just like they dropped Indeo support on the PC in QuickTime 7.5.5 for Windows). The only way to test this theory is to revert back to an older version of QuickTime. I suggest 7.4. Remember to save your Pro key before you change anything.
Another program you can use is MPlayer OS X. I’m pretty sure it’ll play CRAM.
And Windows Media Player for the Mac won’t help, because it only plays ASF/WMV files (at least that’s what the specs read), and it doesn’t have CRAM in it anyway.
