avi's won't play in new Win Media?

Same here. I can’t figure out how to play when WMP says that it supports avi.

Only audio, downloaded latest codecs, but still does not work. Please help

I’ve found windows media player to me more and more limited. There’s a free player called Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli) that we run on all our computers.

did anyone download angelpotion codecs/compression ???
i checked some files and the one’s that don’t work are compressed with it?

recently upgraded to new Windows Media player. Now, some of my avi movies won’t play video ... only audio. What can I do to see video? Thanks much, kc

I’ve narrowed it down a little further. The problem is seen in WMP 9 and 10. If a file is identified as the src attribute in an element and the .avi file is in the same directory or subdirectory, everything is OK. But when the .avi is in a sibling directory or the parent directory, and the path in the src attribute is changed accordingly, the WMP window only displays the controls, no video. This is not restricted to .avi files. It also applies to .wmv and .mpeg3 files. Opening wmplayer.exe and then getting the files directly is fine. Only through an html page do I see problems.
Are there new security restrictions in WMP 9 that disable navigation from within html pages to higher directories? The .avi’s work great in WMP 6 and 8.

I just upgraded graphics card to nvidia 6600 n now vid files (mostlt avi) won’t play, it just stays black or in WMP switches to one of those crappy screensaver things. Any help with this would be greatlt appreciated as i dont have time to take it into a shop.

Well, i have always had this prblem, every time i format my pc, last time i formatted it i had it working perfectly. I think you might need to download the avi codecs again from somewhere although they are hard to find...............

The reason avi’s won’t play is that the Microsoft critical update messed things up. You have to either do a system restore to an earlier date and not update WMP again or you have to go to add/remove software, check the box at the top (show updates) and then remove the WMP update. Microsoft has somehow screwed up again.

Which update? Have ya' traced it to a specific update? I can’t get Winamp to play it either, and Real says “the video can’t be played” or something to that effect...

I don’t remember which Windows critical update is the one which causes the problem but like I said you have to go to add/remove software, check the box at the top (show updates) and then remove the WMP update. I would look for any update that has to do with WMP and it would probably be the latest one. That solved my problem. I also told update not to show me that particular update again.

stathis, have you tried removing the WMP critical update. Other than that it may be that you need a codec.

stathis, you can check to see which codec WMP is using with the program called DECCHECK - I think it may be a program that comes with XP but you can also google for it.
If you’re interested I can tell you what codecs mine is using.

Just bought a new JVC digital camcorder and have installed a Conceptronic firewire card (no software for card suplied or required ) but can´t download into PC. Have tried Windows movie maker, Pinnacle 9 and Magix software but my PC freezes when I try to Record. Can anyone help

I downloaded DivX (free version) and installed it after experiencing the no video problem with .avi files and it solved it.

This is a super simple fix. I just went through the same problem. all you have to do is download the divx codec. go to divx.com and download the divx codec. its free and will allow you to work. good luck guys
