.avi audio works, no video, then wmp shuts down

hello! i am have a problem playing .avi video files i have downloaded. i’ve downloaded quite a few movies and tv shows in the past, but lately everytime i play a recently completed file (in both winamp and windows media player) only the sound can be heard, the screen is blank and an error message pops up from windows saying that the program needs to shutdown... i don’t know if this is a problem with my system or with the codecs... hope someone can help!

I have the same problem here. I never had problem and suddendly, I have problem with half my downloaded video file. Maybe new codec are availaible on the internet?

Same problem here too, I get the same problem in media player. However I can view the video in virtual dub but don’t know how to fix it... and answers?

apparently it is a codec problem... so what you have to do is:

1) delete all the codec already on your computer
2) google: ffdshow
3) download it... unzip the file and the problem should be fixed!

hi, have a file which can be played in divx player but not divx subtitle displayer. Is there a codec I missed out?

I am confused, I have many avi files but some of them bounce...as in the picture looks like it is trying to run ahead then back but the sound is perfect...

So watching the avi you get a large headache...and flickering eyes...lol

Anyone come across this problem?

I downloaded one of the CoDecs from satsuki but i don’t know how to get it to decode files for winamp...do I have to do something to get it to work?

lauren.....A good app that looks 4 installed codecs in ur computer system n gives U the possibility 2 remove them is DLL Archive which U can get at this link here:

I got a similar problem, I can’t see avi files with winamp, i haven’t tried Windows player, but i use BSPlayer and they work the problem is in winamp? Somebody help?

I had the same problem as Viv. I followed her advice re " it is a codec problem..." - downloaded ffdshow and installed (did not bother to remove any previous version of any codec though) - and VOILA - it worked. Thanks much Viv

okay step by step advise plz okay i dont know which ffdshow to download plz be specific and plz tell how do u unzip the file am just trying to figure out how to watch avi. files okay thats all so plz help

just go to this page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow
click download ffdshow, then click download on either file (2002 or 2004 both should work, i chose the 2002). next, click on either the zip or exe (i chose the exe). run the install exe, let it do its thing and everything should be fixed; it was for me at least.

Had similar problem in WMP 10 & 11.

Saw possible solution posted elsewhere- Using ATI video?? If you have Catalyst Control Centre (CCC)installed- remove it and just use the card driver.

It affected my Nero as well with sound and no video. All fixed with removal of CCC.
