Hi, I’m not really very computer savvy, and I have been trying to edit various episodes of Robot Chicken so I can put them on my PSP. However, one of them is avi, and when I try to import it, it says it need the codecs. Where can I get these?

Also, I have another episode, which is in MP4 format. I have been trying to convert it to another format so I can then edit THAT one. However, none of the video converters I have tried support MP4, so do you know where there is a free one? Alternatively, is there a piece of freeware that will let me edit MP4s so I don’t even have to convert them?

Thanks a lot!

PS I have tried using DivX and Blaze Media Pro to convert, but neither has worked. And I tried even editing the avi one on Blaze, but for some reason, it would not show the episode being played.

First you have to find out the fourcc of the AVI file. That will tell you what video codec you need. Use a tool such as gspot (http://www.headbands.com/gspot) or avicodec (http://avicodec.duby.info).

mp4 was supposed to be “the” container for mpeg-4 video, but it never caught on. instead people have been implementing the video compression part of the mpeg-4 standard in different containers (mostly avi. examples: divx, xvid, 3ivx)
But to answer your question
- QuickTime Pro (pay - $30 from Apple) will allow you to edit mp4 files.
- Regular QuickTime (free) will play mp4 files, but won’t allow editing.
- 3ivx will play mp4 files, but I’m not sure whether the decoder will allow third-party applications (such as editors) to recognize the mp4 file. It may depend on whether the editor is DirectShow or Video for Windows-based.
- mp4ui (http://mp4ui.sourceforge.net) will allow you to create mp4 files. I don’t know whether it has any editing capabilities. For creating mp4’s there’s a nice guide here http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mp4.htm

P.S: You might find more relevant info in the 3ivx forums. The closest I could find (I only glanced quickly) was this, which refers to using graphedit (clearly not something for newbies) with 3ivx to create mp4 files http://forums.3ivx.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/topic.cgi?forum=16&topic=39
