Hi. I hope someone out there can help me. I got a Memorex MP3 player for Christmas (MMP8500), and I tried to download files to it. There is an error message on the screen that says,
“Error! Reform external media SigmaTel form." I have tried to reach Memorex customer service at 3 different numbers, but have had no luck. Does anyone know how to get rid of this error message or what it means? Thanks for any help out there.

I had this problem also. The player would not boot up with the card but the card was intact when you hooked it back up to USB. I noticed that the card was a FAT32 and the player was a FAT. I changed the settings and formatted to FAT nad everything worked fine. Best of luck.

If you want to use a card with more than 64MB, you need to use the CD that was with the player.
DO NOT USE AUTORUN! Explore the disc, go into the “products” folder, run the stusbmscformat.exe
application. It will show a the drive letter for the player, click the arrow and select the next drive letter down, then press start. This worked for me, I hope it will be useful. Why memorex doesn’t address this issue is beyond me.

I reformated the SD card as FAT instead of FAT32 using Windows XP. That worked for me.

I could not get the Memorex formatting program to work (maybe because I flashed the player with updated firmware?)

Anyway... I connected the player to my WinXP computer, right-clicked on the drive representing the SD card and selected “Format”. Selected FAT instead of FAT32 from the list... and bingo.

I have a MMP8500A and every time I get the format error message, I take out the battery and the memory card, put the memory card back in first, then put the battery back in. It works for me...

Using the program stusbmscformat.exe while the 128MB card was in the player (See Post by RJ), worked on my MMP3642A. None of the other “Solutions” worked.
P.S.
Brandon, if you are going to call people Idiots you better make sure your solution works for everybody.

I’ve tried using a 1GB sd card in the MMP3642A with no success. Has anyone gotten it to work? Interestingly, I can transfer files to the 1GB card when it is in the MMP3642A, but when I turn on the player to listen to the files, I get the sigmatel formatter error message. I tried running the sigmatel formatter, but it doesn’t understand the 1GB size. Apparently whoever programmed this braindead formatter program only programmed it for up to 512MB sd cards. Interestingly, I tried flashing this player with the MMP8500 firmware, and then the player does play files off of the 1GB sd card, but the LCD is mostly cutoff and only 25% of the LCD shows up. So it seems the only obstacle to using a 1GB sd card is this stupid formatter program. I tried formatting the sdcard to fat16 instead of Fat32, but that did not help.

I have a Memorex MMP 8500A and I tried to follow the directions to upload the firmward from memorexelectronics.com and now everytime I turn the player on I get the error: error reformat internal media as FAT16. I tried to open the drive with the player attached and go to the FAT option and nothing happened...I’m still getting the error. Any ideas?? Help??
Also, and this is probably a totally stupid question, but do you have to have a memory card to make the player work? This is my first MP3 and I was under the impression that the player had its own memory?? If you could help me that would be great! Thank you!

I just want to say thank you to all who replied with solutions to fixing the error with these mp3 players. I did use the stusbmscformat.exe and succesfully played songs from a SanDisk 512MB card. Again thanks to all who submitted fixes.
