(I presume you mean mpeg-1) You can use the export feature from QuickTime Pro. QuickTime Pro is pay from Apple ($30 - not really a budget buster). I forget the exact reason why, but QuickTime Pro won’t let you convert the audio in mpeg-1 files. You’d have to do it separately, by using VirtualDub (go to file, save as wav) then merging the two back together (I forget how though).

I should have suggested this earlier. I totally forgot to mention it before, because I was really tired the night I answered this thread.
Use virtualdub to convert your mpeg to avi (preferrably using a lossless codec or uncompressed). Then use QuickTime Pro to convert to mov. That handles the audio.

Hey there,

I need to convert .mpg files to .mov files as well, but I can only find Virtualdub for Windows. (You suggested using virtualdub to .avi, then using Quicktime Pro to .mov) Is there any program similar to virtualdub for Mac? I’m having a lot of trouble figuring out how to do this on my mac and am getting frustrated. Thanks for any help!

AVS Video Converter from avs-video-tools.htm" rel="nofollow" target="_new">AVS Video Tools

No one program supports so many video formats:
*.avi, *.divx, *.xvid, *.ifo, *.vob, *.vro, *.mp4, *.m4v, *.h263, *.h264, *.mpeg, *.mpg, *.m1v, *.m2v, *.dat, *.mpe, *.3gp, *.3g2, *.3gpp, *.3gp2, *.wmv, *.wmv-hd, *.asf, *.mov, *.qt, *.rm, *.rmvb, *.swf, *.dvr-ms, *.dv, *.dif, *.flv, *.mkv, *.ogm.

There is a great chance that you’ll never need another program to handle video files!!!

I am attempting to put together a highlight video of my Sons football games this year. I have a Sony camera with a hard drive. Each week I downloaded that weeks game to my pc, then burned a disc. Well...I then purchased an IMAC. After purchasing the IMAC, I immediately downloaded that weeks game onto my IMAC and edited it. Then...I put in a disc of one of the previous games I had burned. When I access the disc, all the files are shown individually. They are all mpg files. When I try to open one of the clips, a screen says that these files are not “movie files”?
I am thinking I need to convert the files on the disc to mov format. Is that possible? What will I need or can I purchase to finish my work for my Son? Is it possible to decompress these files....so that they were like they were when in the camera, so that I can work with them on my IMAC (imovie)? Please help!

There is a tutorial, which teach you convert video/audio(MOV/MP4/FLV/AVI/MPEG/3GP/MP3/AAC...) to each other step by step on your Mac.
