I’m watching a movie (yes porn) but it wont fast forward at all. Most movies i can fast foward at anytime but some I cant. I’m playing these movies in kazaa, windows media player, and winamp. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

liquidnuke Guest | The reason this happens is because the movie is recorded with a certain codec (compressor) that microsoft has limited so that it can’t fast forward - it’s to do with proprietry stuff.
Most players will use the exisitng codecs on the system and therefore won’t be able to fast forward either. Try lots of different players, or try to find a hacked codec for this movie. There are tools to find which codec the movie is encoded with - they will tell you the 'four cc' code which can help in your search. It’s usually not an easy problem to fix

11474 Guest | My asf files are like that. I have G-spot and it says “NA” for Video and Audio codec for this file. What does that mean? I have VLC, Real, Media and DIVX players. File plays in VLC but won’t fast forward.

gspot can’t determine the codec of windows media files (yet). The only tool that can at this time is avicodec, which you can get at
http://avicodec.duby.info
(to other people who have trouble fast-forwarding)
It’s one of the features of the Windows Media format (extension wmv or asf). (It’s also one of the reasons why I don’t like that format). It was designed primarily for streaming over the internet, and while you stream you hardly ever fast-forward or rewind; you just watch the movie in one sitting. Most Windows Media files do have the (limited) ability to seek, and that’s because the person who made them indexed the files (this is the equivalent of inserting keyframes in avi’s - frames which contain all the picture information about the frame and don’t need info from the previous or next frame to reconstruct the image). I don’t think there’s a workaround for this unless you re-index the Windows Media file (basically like inserting more keyframes).

Ali Guest | To be able to do this in a .wmv file the file has to be correctly 'indexed' - which in most cases the creator neglects to do. To index a WMV file yourself use the Windows Media File Editor utility, freely downloadable from Microsoft (Google for “Windows Media Encoder 9 Series”.

baddy Guest | ali, could you please explain exactly how to index it in the WM encoder? I have some .wmv files that are doing the same thing (won’t ff/rw). I imported one into the WM encoder but can’t figure out which option would do this, saw nothing that included index. Anyn help would be appreciated.

CB Guest | A follow up. I downloaded the Windows Media encoder and the WMCodecs, ran the Windows Media File Editor, opened the file and went to “Save As and Index”. It did not work at first with the error “Failed to Save File” - BUT - good news - when I played the file in the Windows Media File Editor for a few seconds (I couldn’t see it but that didn’t matter) and hit the Mark In button it set the recording start time just a few seconds after the start of the file. I then again went to “Save As and Index” and after a minutes (essentially the the time it took to copy the file) a new file was saved with the ability to move forward and reverse in Media Player and Divx Player. Yeah ! Hope this helps others.

SomeOne Guest | Not sure if it works on all files but at least in some cases you can fast forward if you use the old windows media player 6.4
I don’t think it is in the start menu at all but just search for a file called mplayer2.exe and you’ll find it, well at least in w2k, not sure about xp.
