I don’t want to download every codec on the planet to solve this, but my WMP doesn’t have the codec to play some DVDs. Have used AVIcodec to check what’s required and it says MPEG 2 (SVCD/DVD) for vid and AC3 DVM [0x80] for audio.
I would have expected the latest version of windows media player to cope with this?!?
I even bought and installed InverVideo’s DVDMP3 Xpack, but then I just got a reduce colour/change resolution message to show video. The audio played ok on an earlier version of WMP, but now it just complains that the codec is missing. Any help is appreciated - I’d rather load the one or two missing codecs rather than go into overkill and load everything in sight.

Cheers,
Dec aka sexiboi

I don’t think it’s WMP11 though, as I’ve upgraded to that on my work pc, and it plays everything fine.

if u have other codecs they will be in either ur program file list

1.my computer
2.the go into ur hardrive
3.then into program files
4.then navigate 2 installed codecs
5.unistall them

or

1.start menu
2.control panel
3.add/remove programs
4. navigate 2 each codec and remove

or u could just install the codec pack and just see it works if it still doesnt it mite be codecs conflicting with each other

but just try cant be any worse than uve already got

hope this helps

Have a new HP DVD Writer 1040 (UScool, external. A few DVDs play, very well, but most of my DVDs don’t play at all. Windows Media Player 11; titles come up; but nothing plays. I downloaded the codec pack, but that didn’t make a difference.

Ugh. Stop bumping old threads! Start new ones if you need to ask a question.
Anyway to answer your question, WMP does not play MPEG-2 or DVD’s by default. You need to install DVD software (WinDVD, PowerDVD, and tons of others listed here).
Interestingly Microsoft did add MPEG-2 support in Windows Vista - but only Ultimate and some other version (I forget which one but I think it’s Home Premium - correct me if I’m wrong). You can play DVD with those.

Tip: Get Media Player Classic (freeware - google it), and click file, open DVD. You didn’t hear that from me though...

I downloaded and installed “vlc-0.8.6f-win32.exe” but it did not solve my problem of being unable to play NetFlix DVD’s. I’m assuming that you are referring to the Linux “guaranteed to run any DVD movie” software? Well, unless I’ve overlooked doing something important, it doesn’t work for me.

I wish I had a step-by-step procedure to guide me through the process of uninstalling/reinstalling things in the proper sequence. MS Windows Media Player appears to me very deficient when it comes to playing DVD’s on Windows XP (Home). Too bad!
