Alternatively, if you’ve $5 to spare, try 'Renamer' from http://www.weltera.com - it allows you to 'bulk change' change file extensions. Free to try. Works for me! (select 'rename extensions only' and in the 'custom box' type .mpg - SIMPLE

Web-Hero Guest | Due to the following:
1) Stereo audio
2) High res video (large file)
The files are separate. JVC names the MPG to .MOD for many reasons, with the obvious showing on this thread lol.
Follow Lady-Hawke’s advice because she’s right (and has a BA in this stuff). That is why the product comes with CyberLink Software!

I forgot to mention that renaming works, but you will not have audio.

FrustratedJeff Guest | All of this converting seems like a total waste of time with this Everio. I bought it because of the HD and the hard drive.
I want to edit my video in anything other than the Cyberlink Power Director that comes with the camera I have to go through the effort of converting everything everytime?
Someone please help me. I’m sooooo frustrated.

danotje Guest | I’m in the same boat as everyone else-JVC cam, XP, want to use Movie Maker. I downloaded the Vista Codec Package just to be able to view the files in WMP.
here: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Vista_Codec_Package/1159994557/1
I then figured out how to rename the mod files to mpg, but when I imported them into WMM, I only had audio. The fix I found was renaming them to MPEG, not MPG. Now it works beautifully and is a lot easier to use than the Cyberlink software. I’ll have to work on the batch rename, though, because I can see that getting tedious after a long vacation. Hope this helps.

danotje Guest | Problem solved! Very simple and quick batch extension renamer on CNET:

I think I’ve found all I need and am going to remove the packaged software.

Pissed Off Guest | I got an Everio and sent all the vids on it to my Desktop folder. I converted them all from .mod to .mpg format and they load into my MovieMaker and play in the top right preview fine, but if I drag them to the storyboard below and play, the vids look like someone whacked out the horizontal hold. Audio is great, though. I’ve tried reassociating to every file type imaginable, but nothing. I won’t use anything but MovieMaker because it’s easy and flexible for me and I don’t have time to relearn something else being busy with 10,000 other things, including a disability. With all this in mind, what does a guy do?

tango1179 Guest | It pays to be an old timer. You don’t need a fancy renamer program if you remember your DOS commands.
REN *.mod *.mpeg
That will rename the entire directory.

dedebster Guest | I would like to download a program that will help me convert video files taken on my brand new Panasonic Camcorder HDD into files compatible with Windows Movie Maker. This would be mod or mov into mpeg or whatever the Windows program will take. Help please!

rukhsana photography Guest | Hi All,
I solved my issues with this today, as this website was one that kept turning up in my searches i thought it would be relevant to post my solution here.
My Problems
File would not load into windows movie maker was my inital issue.
I got to the stage where it was essential to convert the file using a movie converter. This creates another entire issue there are so many converters out there, some work some don’t.
I used a converter named
SUPER © v2007.build.23
at website
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
This provided 1/2 a solution it would convert the file to play in windows media player and import into movie maker....however when i dragged the clip into the time line i could hear but not see the clip.
After more reserch i decided to download a codec pack called
k-lite from
http://www.codecguide.com/
allthough i actually downloaded from this place
http://www.majorgeeks.com/K-Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack_d5230.html
when installing the K-lite codec pack i uninstalled all the codecs it suggested i uninstall and agreed to the recommendations the installation wizard suggested.
I can now finally import and edit what were once files created by a panasonic hybrid movie camera into windows movie maker.
heres the short guide to it
download the program from here to convert your files to wmv format.
http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html
After you convert the file you will most likely be able to import your movie and play it on wmp but when you drag it into the time line of movie maker you will hear but not see it. If this is true then download the codec pack below
http://www.majorgeeks.com/K-Lite_Mega_Codec_Pack_d5230.html
Good luck !!
I am using windows xp it worked a treat

ghapless Guest | LadyHawke,
Thanks... the conversion you mentioned worked, nonetheless, is there any way to convert in an easier manner??? Going through all this BS just to edit in Micr Movie Maker is a pain in the arse. Had I of known the Everio’s movies were going to be such trouble I wouldnt have bought it... g

Relieved Guest | Ladyhawke, Thank you for the advice that you gave about this...I ran across it today after fiddling with this JVC for over 4 hours...the conversion process worked like a charm. Thank you again.

Docker Guest | Has anybody tried to get any help from JVC?
This is insane, they sell devices that need whole bunch of dedicated message boards just for trying to solve the compatibility problems with the most common working environments. I tried to get help from my home country JVC, and asked very specificly what to do. Guess what was the answer mail that I got. It only included two words: “Pinnacle Studio”.
I don’t say that JVC is purposely sabotating their customers, but it seems extremely difficult to get customer support for JVC products. My next camera will not definitely be JVC, thanks to their overlooking “support” and compatibility problems.

mad4u2rock Guest | I just want you to know that your post has really helped me out. I have spent just about a week trying to work on this. Offer: I’m in a band who has shot a video and are looking for someone to edit it. I have already story borded it but would like to have someone do the final edits who knows what software to use in regards to the JVS camera. Please let me know if you are interested. and what you would charge me. Thank you again for the post! It was very helpful.

I have been using the JVC hard drive since Christmas. I’ve been doing the following successfully and burning it to DVD’s since I got the camera.
And if it makes a difference to any film-makers out there, I have a B.A. in film/video. (I do this for a living.)
Open Cyberlink Power Director.
Open and check your footage.
When you import your footage, note that you only see the .MOD, not the .MOI. That is because the MOI is the audio file and is opened with the .MOD (Its automatic.)
Make sure you can play your footage in cyberlink.
Select your footage (green outline)
Select “produce” to open your render window.
Assign your output.
Select “create a file” and click “Next”.
Select “AVI”
In the left drop down list underneath, Select Microsoft AVI.
In the right drop down, Select your quality.
Click the settings button(The Wrench)to open AVI profile settings.
Select Compression “Microsoft Video 1” and
Select Composition “Video and Audio”
Then Click O.K. and it goes back to produce window.
Click next.
Double check your “export file”. This is where you want to find the AVI when it is done.
And Click Start.
Now you have a video clip that Movie maker can slice and dice.
If anyone else has a problem, let me know and I can walk you through it.

Cherubino Guest | Thank you so much ladyhawke - this is the first time I have ever solved a codec problem by following someone’s advice on the web - I can now use my JVC clips in Movie Maker!
Can anyone help me with one problem with Powerdirector though - how do you put a title for your film at the beginning, before any of your clips? you can do this on moviemaker, but not Powerdirector.
