I keep getting an error message on some quicktime .mpg movies. It says it doesn’t recognize the format -2048.
Can somebody please help me? I don' know what this means and some files are important to me

you could try this MPEG-2 Codec
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Codec-Packs-Video-Codecs/Stinkys-MPEG-Codec.shtml
let me know if it helps

Since neither of the other two who posted the question replied to your query and helpful answer, I will.

Thanks for the tip, unfortunatly it still does not play in quicktime. From reading the readme.txt that comes along with the codec, it is designed for Windows Media Player among others. I (like the other two) am trying to use quicktime so that I can export it to a MOV file. In my case it is to turn around and import into AVID which will not accept MPG files.

I already tried what trance_aquarius suggested. The problem is that the site he suggests is for windows only and I use a Mac. (if there is a Mac alternative please guide me to it). What I’ve been using to watch the movies that give me the error message is a program called VLC. I don’t know what it does or whats the difference exactly but at least I can watch them. It’s cumbersome but it can be done. I’ve tried with several codecs and Mpeg-2 etc.. and I keep getting the same message.

if you’re using a mac, to solve this problem: download a program call mPlayerOSX.

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html

It worked for me. hopefully it will work for you too. If not, then it might be that you don’t have the codec for the movie.

Also, if you’re having an error with vlc, try changing the extension to wmv=windows media player. if you’re on the mac, you need to download a windows media player to play the movie. There’s a version for the mac.

Hope this help, if not, email me.

I have tried both VLC and Mplayer OSX.
It has worked in most cases, but still it’s a nuasense to have to open manually the program and then go and search the file to open it within the program.
You can try with right click and say open with... but you never know when the file will give you the error.
What I do for sure is that any file that comes as mpg I change the type to mpeg andin most cases it becomes viewable.
Also, by going to the quicktime page and downloading the third party codecs you reduce the problem substantially. I still don’t know why if Apple is a master in the plug-and-play, it doesn’t include the codecs instead of reffering you to them. Well, maybe it’s part of marketing after all.

1½ yrs ago, I wrote on this 4rum regarding ppl questioning about playing mp4 video. So I recommended NullSoft WinAmp media player. No 1 seem 2 pay any attention 2 what I say. Oh well..that is how ppl born with coconut brains don’t seem 2 understand. Its hard 2 knock some senses in2 them. So, if any of U still interested, so READ all about it HERE!! (Below)

I had the same problem trying to put mpeg4 on my ipod, the best thing to do is convert it into H.263 then it’ll play in quicktime or transfer into iTunes. The only problems i have encountered is mp4 files which have been converted from Xvid AVI files maybe the codec causes an error.

The M Player at this site requires skillful assembly of source code, skins, etc. Why they don’t offer it in one piece is beyond my knowledge as is the ability to work with the pieces. The files that have given me the error 2048 I can live without and are not worth the aggravation.

Still looking for a practical solution.

I’m having the same problem, but with a Quicktime movie created in iMovie and then transfered onto a pc. This is a DV quality iMovie export. Any thoughts on how I can open it? Thank you.

Mac users check out www.Versiontracker.com for everything you could think of, including VLC and MPlayerOSX. Also, make sure you go to www.mactopia.com (www.microsoft.com/mac) and follow the links to download the Flip4Mac Windows Media codec for Quicktime. It’s officially sanctioned by Microsoft who has discontinued the Mac version of Windows Media Player. (At least they stopped development of it. But I believe they have pulled WMP Mac altogether.)

Some of the newest Windows Media formats will not play on Macs. That’s Microsoft’s proprietary nature.

The good news is there’s lots of Quicktime files and older Windows Media stuff that work fine.
