Help loading iPod

This may have already been addressed on here, but I could not find it if it has.
I got my son a new iPod for christmas, but we can’t figure out how to get music files from the PC to the iPod. They play fine on the PC. Can anyone tell me what format they need to be for the iPod? I/we would really appreciate any help.
