This happened two or three nights ago. I haven’t uninstalled anything. Windows Media Player used to play my avi files but now it will only play the sound and not the video.

I can use DivX but for some reason that will only play video that are like 20 minutes long but when I try to play a file that’s about 40-45 minutes long, the run time says its playing but no sound or video will play.

So I seriously need help with at least one of these please.

Thanks.

Oh nevermind. I have just uninstalled and reinstalled divx codec and my video is working on WMP again. But if you could help me with that DivX problem of mine, I’d be really grateful anyway. =]

This is not like a definitive solution, but you can try this for diagnostics.
Download VirtualDub, and open the file with it. If you get a warning about corrupt avi header, and it takes a while to scan or reindex, then file length is incorrect (aka the header reports a file size inconsistent with what it actually is - usually indicates the file has been truncated/chopped at some point). If you get a VBR (variable bitrate) audio warning, don’t worry - VirtualDub doesn’t work well with VBR, but this is irrelevant to your problem as you’re not doing any editing or encoding. Then just drag the time bar all the way to the right (or at least as far as it can get). Can it play beyond whereever it went black before? Or is it black? Do you get any error message at the bottom (like frames not decodable or something like that)?
The point of trying this is to see if the video is decodable from start to finish (aka no corruption in the middle), and that the size is consistent.

What does it mean when you are trying to play movies on the windows media player 11 and the message codec aquired? also about a week ago my videos on my myspace page went blank and there is a little square in the top left hand corner. Im not sure if all the videos on my computer no longer play or what the problem could be but the only thing i can watch now is you tube. HELP
