Video Codecs

I am having so much trouble. I have an avi file that I was trying to put onto a cd-r through ahead nero. I don’t know what I have done wrong, but when I play the cd after the encoding and burning, I have a blank screen. I am new at all of this and have no idea what to do. If anyone can help me, please do so. Thank You
