Check this site at hot downloads for tools and install GSpot or Avicodec and open the avi with one of them and you’re going to find out what type of file you have and what codecs you may need. Also Google players like VLC and Media Classic freewares and they use their own codecs. reply

Again had the sound but no visual. Followed this advice re firstly getting the avicodec to id what file type the torrent download was then went about finding appropriate codecs to decode. In this case it was a DIVx codec so found the free download and wha-lah! Problem solved. Thankyou! reply

I am having the same problem. I had a power outage and afterwards all video formats (avi, mov, mpg...) have the same problem - audio but no video.

Gspot says my codec is installed and is fine.

I had this very same problem on a different machine a couple weeks ago. power outage followed by all video formats only playing audio and no video.

I tried different players - windows media player, real player, nero player, quicktime and all have the exact same result audio and no video!

This problem is making me bloody insane! The only way I got it working on my other system was to do a complete system re-install! This really blows ass! There has to be a way to refresh the video system without reinstalling the entire system! reply

This is making me lose my mind! I have uninstalled and reinstalled my video drivers, I have uninstalled and reinstalled nero, windows media player, divx, quicktime and real player.

Every god damn video format on every god damn player only plays audio and no video!!! Gspot says the codecs are installed.

I have two machines and run gspot on the other system and it looks identical to this one.

This same problem happened on the other system a couple weeks ago and I went through a similar nightmare trying to get it fixed. I ended up having to do a complete f’ing os re-install! This is really pissing me off! How the bloody hell can windows get so fucked up without giving any kind of usable error message to help identify and repair the damage!

It takes a week to re-install the entire system and it really blows that the video system can get so fuckin wrapped around the axle just because of a fuckin power failure! reply

Are you using ATI graphics?

I had an identical problem, I have an ATI based graphics card, simply re-installing the drivers did not work but have now found the solution:-
I opened the ATI control panel (Cataylst Control Centre) went to Video - Video Basics. Video Presets was set to Custom. I just changed it to Home and everything works again - problem solved!

If this is no good for you I suggest you try:-
Go to Safe Mode, uninstall all graphics card software including drivers, control center, etc. Reboot into Windows and reinstall software and drivers (individually if possible, not from the an integrated package containing everything). on reinstall run the custom setup making the system adjustments manually, This should solve the problem. reply

Switching the ATI Catalyst Video settings from custom to Theater/Home did the trick for me.

I had the same problem with only some .avi playing just audio. Went to the link in Peymonster’s post above and downloaded the divx suite. Fired up divx player and the .avi all work perfect. That’s a good free codec they include. Real sharp playback. reply

notatechie,

No to the ATI problem. Your card is NVidia, not an ATI card. they are you competitors.

For the .avi files you require a missing codec. If you have Windows Media Player installed, try playing it in there and it should try to download the correct codec. reply
