Seems Nvidia drivers and the settings is causing green screen while playing video using mplayer/windows media player 9.x+, VLC, Zoom and many more, not experienced with QuickTime though.

There is default bogus values on the Edge enhancement and Noise reduction options. setting these values using the Nvidia Control Panel->Video&television->Adjust Video Color Settings->Enhancements - to anything but 0 (zero) will solve many green screen problems on Nvidia cards.

It doesnt matter how many codecs you try if these settings isnt set correctly.

Just set some value to the Edge enhancement and Noise Reduction. reply

Update: Nevermind the Nvidia thing. It was the Asus Splendid Enhancement that screwed it up. Just disable it and it will work fine.

properties->settings->advanced->Asus->Asus Splendid

and uncheck the checkbox. reply

battleangel007 you are The BEST!!! I had tried & tired to fix the green screen on Netflix Watch Instantly & this did it. :-) I must have a newer Windows Media Player since your post was last year.
This is the sequence now:
1) Open WM Player 2)Right click on words “Windows Media Player” in top left 3) Click Tools 4) Click Options 5) Click on Performance tab 6)Go down to Video acceleration and move the bar to None 7) After moving the bar click Advanced button 8) Unclick the box that says Enable full-screen mode switch 9) Click OK button 10) Click Apply button on Options.
Voila'! Netflix viewing. Enjoy. reply

I had the same problems playing all my avi files. I dont know why because I check them after they finish d/l to see they are what they supposed to be and they all worked fine untill recently, I have scoured forums tried different players and codecs with no result..

However - whilst trying to solve another problem to do with DirectX I changed the display settings which seems to have corrected the green screen, until I try to load another .avi and then it seems to automatically switch the display settings back!!?

Hopefully this will help solve the green screen problem cos I know who frustrating and confusing it is!

Also if anyone knows y loading different.avi files might automatically adjust my display settings please help!!! reply

For search engine purposes. “Solution to the problem of media play showing a green screen only while trying to play videos."

I have had this issue for several weeks now with no releif. Ive tried everything here too. When I saw all these people thanking Temux over and over I thought I had found my answer.

Unfortunately with BOTH fixes tried (the two on page one of this thread.) Im still getting the same issue. I havent read beyond page 3 however because as we speak I dont have my vid card drivers installed anymore and everything updates VERY slowly.

Anyhow back to the issue. Ive been having this problem with my medial player from Windows version 9, 10 and 11 and with GOM player. I get audio but the video is the dreaded green screen. Divix will actually play most of these videos, while some of them it wont play at all. Some of the vids that dont play if I advance through the vid I get still frames.

Another frustrating part of this issue is that Windows will display thumbnails of the video, so its being played, but behind this green screen.

I remember having this issue in the past with a black screen and I was able to go into my nVidia control panel and turn off overlays and it would be fixed..however (and this is how ive gotten to where im at now) I noticed in my nVidia control panel under the Video options at the bottom where the overlay options normaly are was just a flickering “Overlay Status”.

This caught my attention and so I decided to uninstall my nVidia display adapters and the control panel.

After doing this and rebooting, Windows Media Player no longer shows a green screen. Leading me to beleive that for me, this issue lies somewhere in the video drivers and or the video control panel. From here I am going to install just the drivers to see if perhaps it was the control panel messing with the overlay keeping it on or maybe its a driver vs codec issue.

All that being said id like to add one more thing. Ive noticed that no one has posted any spec at all on their system when they are saying they have this issue. Most times its required to post your specs when asking for tech advice.

I recommend to everyone if you feel like helping out the community in finding a permanent fix for this issue to post things like their OS, their video card, their sound card, their CPU and if known what codec packs are installed.

Im sure we can find a common denominator to this problem and help the programers out there create the perfect hot fix for all of us. reply

My system specs -
OS - Windows XP Home Service Pack 3
CPU - Intel P4 Celeron 2.0ghz
Vid Card - GeForce 2 MX 400 - 256mb - PCI (could be my issue, PCI cards suck...)
Sound Card - Integrated AC 97 - Realtek
Before I uninstalled everything I was using Windows MP 11, Divix PLayer, GOM player. To try and fix it I tried KLite codec packs, Divix Codec packs, The hotfix on the windows site (YES there is a Windows HotFix for this that DOES work for some setups.) suggestions on other sites and finally the 2 suggestions on page one of this site. I havent tried any of the other suggestions because I didnt read that far, however I have noticed that it seems one of the other solutions requires downloading another player of sorts. Im the kind of person that wont sleep with a solution like this. The way I feel, it should work in Windows Media Player with that player installed alone IMO. I have Divix and GOM players because I like those players, and I should be able to find a fix so that it at least works in one of these three players. So far green screen keeps me from playing some movies in any player...so on to a fix..I hope reply
