AVI Problem

I am having difficultly with a series of .AVI files. Everytime I open the files, the first frame of the file plays, but it freezes and the sound carries on. If I skip ahead, the image stays the same and only the sound skips foward. The files appear to be complete. I have tried recompessing in VirtualDub, but I get the same issue with the files. I have also tried converting in TMPEG and I get a similar error (the first frame plays and then everything goes black for the next twenty minutes).

GSpot says that these files are in DivX...which is interesting. Since the first twenty files (this is an anime show) are all in Xvid. I am wondering if anyone has had this problem before, and what did you have to do to fix it? Or if you have ANY suggestions, please let me know.
