.cue problem

using bittorrent, i just DL a cd. the folder contained the music (mp3) just one big file that plays fine. a read me file advertising a website. 2 jpegs which are the cd covers and then a .cue file with the same name as the .mp3
can anyone telll me what this cue is for?
