cannot determine file type"

I’ve been having a problem with a number of movie files, getting a “cannot determine file type” error, usually with mpeg files. Latest Win Media PLayer, RealPlayer, Quicktime, Virtual Dub, nothing can recognize them. Power DVD can play them but they are very garbled.

can anyone tell me what codec i need?
