converting .mov files

I just bought the new Kodak Easy Share DX6340 camera and the file extension for videos I take is .MOV . Is there any way I can convert these files to play with Windows Media Player so I can incorporate them into movies I make with the Windows Movie Maker??? ANY HELP is much appreciated!!!!

Just so happens I have the same camera and the same problem. In fact, I stumbled on your query after doing a Google search on this very issue. (I’m looking for a conversion tool myself.)

My preliminary findings suggest you need Quicktime Pro to handle the conversion. (You may know that the .mov format is QuickTime’s native format.) The good news is that QuickTime Pro costs only $29.99, so even though it’s not freeware it isn’t a budget buster, either.

Here’s a link that explains how to do the conversion under QuickTime Pro. Looks like it might be a little hairy:

Hey there....I found a solution to our problem that doesn’t cost a penny! You have to download RadTools(Bink-Smacker). It works great and its totally free. Here’s the website for you...good luck!

Once you download the program, select a file and chose 'Convert a File' in the lower left corner. Then choose the output type (for windows media player you need AVI). Make sure to check the bottom box to 'Convert Audio', otherwise the video will not have the sound. Then click 'convert file'.

ok its me again. so that website doesnt actually let you download RadTools. I thought it was the one i used, but it was so long ago i don’t remember. I will try to do a google search to find out where u can download it, and u can do the same. Sorry for the confusion!

Downloaded Radtools, tried to convert as described, but I get an error msg that cannot read file...any ideas?

Hmmmmm, i’ve never seen that myself. It has always worked for me. Are u converting .mov files?

I just found this thread - I’ve a problem convertng the audio and the video looks pretty ordinary?

Make sure to check the “convert audio” box on the bottom, after you choose the output type and before you hit convert.

just make sure u downloaded the quicktime app... thats all i had to do to get rid of that error message.. it works great... now i can watch some good movies i got on my camera :-D

There’s a lot of ways to convert from quicktime to other formats
there’s a lot of tools listed on this page

Some are pay, like quicktime pro, but a few are not.
mov2avi is command-line, so it’s not too user-friendly
rad video tools, mentioned in an earlier post, is graphical, so it’s probably the way to go
my favorite option if you’re using a cross-platform codec (like indeo or cinepak) is intel’s smartvid application. It converts between avi and quicktime without doing any recompression, so there’s no loss in quality. the catch is you need the codec to be cross-platform. for example if you tried to convert a sorenson quicktime movie to avi it wouldn’t play because there is no sorenson codec for windows.
finally you can also use tmpgenc (the free version is on tmpgenc.net, NOT tmpgenc.com) to convert from quicktime to mpeg, but you need the quicktime decoder which you can by googling for QTReader.zip or QTReader.vfp (sadly divx-digest seems to have removed it from their site)

I too have the kodak easyshare and I too want to make movies using Movie Maker, and I too have had problems with the .mov/quicktime thing.

I have 100’s of movies to convert, does anybody know a good way to do batch conversions of these files, otherwise I’m going to have to dedicate several weekends to this!

(p.s. why don’t they make MM 2 compatible with .movs!!, it’s such a pain!)

Thank you Seg5, I was able to load radtools and do the conversion; BUT, then found that even the uncompressed .avi file at over 66MB of data had serious pauses in the play mode with Media Player or Quick Time. Is there any trick to the conversion that will prevent that?

You may have to reencode it. Just pick your favorite codec. (It should have the option when you convert to avi - look at your options - there should be other options than uncompressed)

Hello April, I have found two programs that do a very good job of converting .mov files: Wildform’s Flix Lite or Pro will convert them and permit virtually ready web site html, if that is what you want; or Bink & Smacker’s Rad Video Tools which permits some adjustment of video and conversion to smaller files that can be used in their own players or an .exe file which launches any player such as Quick Time or Media Player.

You can Google either version and choose.
