I was trying to solve a different problem and stumbled on the solution to this one. The codec you need is most likely already installed on your computer. It is called “Microsoft ADPCM Codec”. The trick is to open your control panel, double click on “Sounds & Multimedia” then click the “devices” tab. Now click on the plus beside “Audio Compression Codecs”. Find “Microsoft ADPCM Codec” and double click. Make sure the radio button for “Use this codec” is selected, then change the priority number to “1”, and click apply. I was just trying to get cleaner audio from my .wav files, but I now have sound from my DivX AVI files, too. Hope it works for you.

I tried the above process. In my control panel instead of “Sounds and Multimedia”, is sounds and “Audio Devices”. I figured it didnt matter that they had the same name, but inside that, there is no “devices” tab, so I clicked “hardware”. In there a found a listed item called “Audio codecs”. I clicked that and found the following list of items in the properties tab 1) Windows media audio 2) Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer 3 Codec 3) Indeo Audio Software 4) Microsoft PCM Converter

I naturally assumed that the 4th item was the one i am looking for, so I changed its priority to 1 and my video files still have the same problem. Is there something I am missing or doing wrong?
