posted in Video Codecs

I have recently downloaded a video file with .xvid-fov. I tried to play it in Windows Media Player but it only sees the file as an audio.

I understand I have to convert from xvid to avi but have no idea how to do this.

Any help appreciated.

Hi bat069,

I am not sure what type of file that is. It could be that it IS an .avi or .wmv files already. In which all you would need to do is to rename the file accordingly and try opening it.

If that does not work, it might be that it is a compressed file. To check that you should try renaming it to .zip --- and see if that can be decompressed, or .tar, or .rar...

Different decompression programs for windows:

7-zip (free, www.7-zip.org)
IZarc (free, www.izarc.org)
WinRAR (www.rarsoft.com)
WinRK (www.msoftware.co.nz)
Stuffit (www.stuffit.com)
WinZip (www.winzip.com)

Lastly it could also just be that the file is a fake :/
