(Moved) Making wmv1/7 and wmv2/8 selectable in virtualdub w/out ffdshow

posted in Video Codecs

A couple of years back when i was noob a was searching for help on the vdub error about not having a vfw codec for wmv7 and wmv8 (am i alone thinking it’s rediculous to have to install ffdshow just for this issue) After going about 7 or 8 pages deep in a search i came across a thread on a general forum i donít recall, which started with the usual problem but at the end somebody popped up and stated 'Simple, just download wmpcdcs8.exe (media player 8 codec installer) and the codec installer for either 7.1, 6.4, 9 or the VCM9 (can’t remember but initially thought it was 7.1). He then said to extract files from the 2 executables into 2 separate folders and delete 2 or 3 files from the wmpcdcs8 folder ('msaud' was in one of the files) then copy and paste into the other folder (i don’t recall having to delete any files from here but could be mistaken). Then run that setup. Seemed awfully simple. I found wmpcdcs8.exe on filestube. Got the other file from MS web site. I followed his steps. The install let you choose which codecs you wanted ( i did not select the direct show choices) then asked if you wanted a complete install or an update (I think I choose complete). I then opened a known wmv8 file in vdub with no error message and ffdshow not installed, then opened vdubs 'Video' menu and selected 'compression' and right there towards the bottom of listed available codecs it showed 'wmv1' and 'wmv2' or 'wmv7' and 'wmv8'. Thrilled at never having to install FFDShow again, I put the issue behind me. Unfortunately, soon after for some reason I had to reformat the drive and have been searching for that thread ever since to no avail. If anyone with knowledge of these packs and what needs to be switched could spare a little time and effort a great puzzle would be solved and they would gain the satisfaction of knowing they helped some moron get on with his life!

Thanks in advance,
