Problem solved. Although I can swear I have had other
subtitle files .srt work with VLC, perhaps VLC
only uses .srt files with certain video formats eg .mpg
Anyway I guessed .srt was not working because it was .avi
video format. So I did a little search and found out about
.smi subtitles files were related to .avi then I read that
they could be converted.
I found an free online converter to convert the .srt file
It worked easily. And now the video file plays with subtitles using VLC.
Hope this helps someone else.
I have a video file and have obtained the correct
subtitle file from the internet. I have opened the
file in word and seen that it has the correct
runtime information and the correct speech
translations. It is an .srt subtitle file.
I renamed both the .avi and .srt to the same file name
and both in the same directory.
VLC does not pick up the subtitles.
