Hi
VERY interesting problem this. I can play any file I like from C: but cannot play AVI files at all from F: - they just show as black screens and are very slow to load to WMP10- these are the very same files just copied across to F from C ! They won’t work in Cyberlink Power Director 4 either when played from F:
I replaced the F: under warranty, formatted it and reinstalled everything but the problem is still there. I had just replaced the motherboard and CPU (they melted down) - there was no problem before this. Could there be a conflict with the F: and either the motherboard or CPU??
Any suggestions would be gratefully received - I am at my wit’s end!!
Cheers
Simon

hello everyone.I’ve had similar problem as many users posted before me although I could delete the .avi files causing the problem (whisc was: explorer crashed every time I opened a file containing a .avi or .mpeg file)
I also didn’t want to mess up with registry and found out this codec:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm
It solved my problem and so far I haven’t had any other problems.

Thank you for this advice i have been having a nightmare the last week as all avi divx xvid etc files were crashing media player or any other player i tried to run them on.Tried everything advised on various forums (DEP disabling, editing reg etc) and this was the winner for me.Thanks again much appreciated. reply

Hi, when Windows Explorer (file mngr) is open and I click onto any avi file everything freezes. This isn’t disk specific, or file specific but it does seems to be any avi file. This is a new problem for me and I thought that the new SP2 upgrade to XP might resolve it but NO. I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del and end the WE session. The files open ok in Windows Movie but not Video Factory 2 upgraded. Does anyone have any ideas of a possible solution. many tks in advance :)

Just wanted to say thanks to Snadge for his good advice. I’ve had this problem before, but it looked like it solved itself. Now I know it didn’t when i just re-did my system and the thumbnail thing came up again.

Now when I re-do my system again, I will know to look after the codecs in this fashion. reply

Many thanks, I was about to revert to an outdated Ghost backup but then I found this fix and was able to track the freezing down to a corrupted codec. If I had a life, I’d owe you 5 hours of it. reply

Seeking Help With 3 Problems.

#1) most of my .avi files display the thumbnail with no problem. by thumbnail i mean it’s usualy the first frame of the .avi file. well, i have one .avi almost identical to the others, just got it today, but it will not display the thumbnail. it only displays a Windows Media Player-ish logo. Even though VLC is it’s default app.

#2) I wanted to change the names of my .avi files. but whenever i renamed it, the file stopped displaying the thumbnail and only displayed that icon i described above. Why? how do i fix that so i can rename files?

#3) my girlfriends computer, she has a folder, once she opens it, exploror crashes. it’s full of .avi files. need that fized. and she has some .avi’s that if she clicks, it freezes.

please if your kind enough to reply, start with “YeahWho” so i know your replying to my questions. thanks. reply

If you want to fix the avi file, and not delete it , you can open it with VirtualDub , and save it again.
It will be ok then. reply
