The problem is just with Nvidia configuration choice. Remove Clone or dual view and define only one view ( principal or subsidiary)in the Nvidia configuration correspoding to your monitor output. If that doesn’t work, change the dvi output of the graphical card behind your computer to the principal one and choose Nvidia configuration to principal view.
I had that problem with my multimedia station using a 7600GT graphic card. I had the same blank screen in PowerDVD, Nero media, VLC. I think it comes from a diehard ancient analog anticopy protection algorithme reply

Same problem as above, have many .avi files on my computer running win2k, have always played them on WMP or (usually) VLC. Upgraded my video card to an ATI Radeon 9200 series so my new 16:10 monitor would work. Since then audio only on all .avi files (new ones and stuff I watched dozens of times.

ATI Catlayst control center, tried the fixes above, my video setting is already set to “home” (though I did try to play a video and mess with the settings as the poster above, and no joy. Juts the new monitor hooked up, did my best to make sure codecs are right, think they are (including divx for win2k (v6.8.5).

Tried to try BenH’s suggestion re: extended GUI but cannot find the setting in my VLC (tried advanced and simple settings, no luck). Also, not entirely clear on what he means due to shorthand nature of post.

Driving me insane. HALP! reply

I have a laptop that had the same problem and this was after a fresh install. My card is the Radeon IGP 320M. I did this:
1) right click desktop, properties.
2) went to the ATI Overlay tab, clicked the Clone mode options button.
3) changed the Overlay Display Mode
4) From “Standard” to “Same on all”
5) opened a video and there was my video back. dont know why this worked but if its working again then its good enough for me. Hope this helps someone cause it was driving me crazy!! reply

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have the ATI Catlayst control center instead, so it’s a little different. I’ve played around with the options in there a ton, but I decided to try to play a video and then play around with some of the options in there, because they were grayed out otherwise (apparently you need to play a video to open them up). I really didn’t change anything, just the video preset selection from custom to home, which should have nothing to do with anything (it’s just picture quality), but my videos are now working. I tried using System Restore to go back to an earlier working date, but as usual, Windows wouldn’t let me restore to any of the dates I tried (a lot). Maybe it partially restored it or something, who knows.

Good luck to everyone else with this problem.

You are a goddamn life saver! You just solved my 1 yr old problem, you are god, thank you! reply
