Missing audio for installed codecs

Ok so my problem is, i downloaded a video file with a .mpg extension. upon examination with VideoToolbox i found only standard codecs were used, video: mpeg2, audio: mpeg audio 1 layer 2.

but for some reason all players play the video but not the sound... i tried winamp, wmp, gdivx and realone but none of them play the audio. any suggestions would be really welcome.

thanx reply

did you convert the file to mpeg yourself?
if you did then you probably got a vbr problem.
which is from xvid encoded file.

you need to know if the video was encoded with xvid. which it most liky was because it gives you better quality and smaller file sizes than divx the only draw back is that tmpgenc does not reconize the audio. hence if you got an xvid tmpgenc convereted movie with out decompressed audio then you r left with a movie that has video but no sound and usually twice the size it should be and black screen at the end.

the way to correct this is take the original file usually filename.avi decompess the audio this will almost double the size of the file then convert the file using tmpgenc it will shrink it back to a file size you were expecting before your sound troubles.
