Thanks to allurus (Guest) I was easily able to fix this problem in Windows Media Player 9 when it gave this message on most mpg, avi etc I had recovered after a format. I now am able to play several hundred files I believed to be irrevocably lost.
The message is below or can be found in these forums at

Sorry, my english is not good enougg.
Well, i had the same problem and the solution is more easy than you think:
1.- click on next link
2.- click on the download quartz.dll file.
3.- download quartz.dll file
4.- go to explore on your windows system and change view files the way you could view dll files.
5.- go to c:windowssystem and delete quartz.dll file (yes, do it, there is no more problem) copy quartz.dll downloaded file.
6.- it’s ok!
Now you can view mpg and avi files. I don´t know if wmv files work that way.
please if works on your system too, please post it. then other people with same problem could trust in my solution.( blieve me, it isn’t a virus).
BYE
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2005

Isn’t depression a pain in the ass
HEY I DID THE SAME THING, THANKS TO ALLURUS (YOU SOLVED ME A BIG PROBLEM DUDE).
At last it’s fixed!! This one had me thinking my files were damaged or something, but it’s all right now (there’s a song about that!) with the new QUARTZ.DLL. Thanks Folks (especially Allurus)
I can’t follow these steps, can someone please explain me???
I clicked the link and downloaded quartz.dll file
BUT on the desktop it shows as a ZIP and it is asking me which program it should open the program with, BUT I DON"T KNOW WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE!!!
And the step #4 made no sense to me, what is the explore?
Can someone PLEASE help me? Thanks a lot
4.- go to explore on your windows system and change view files the way you could view dll files.

YOOhooo Eylem...If you want to watch avi, mpg(mpeg), BIN(image file), you need vlc.
www.videolan.org/vlc/
To watch MKV video file, you need bs player.
www.bsplayer.com/index.php?p=download
And finally WMV are compatible with WinAmp.
www.winamp.com/download/
So now all you have to do is to discard that antique WMP10 or 9 to the pre-historic era once and for all.
PS. I don’t know if I am reading right (I mean your problem)..if not screw me.
How does this work? For me, Windows agressively protects the original file. If I erase the original Quartz.dll or replace it, it instantly rewrites the old buggy one over it.
Hi Stormsayer, you are right, windows doesn´t allow you to delete or rewrite the file. The answer is simple, windows takes hold of mostly all dll’s when it is running, sure quartz.dll is being used or reserved.
I wonder how allurus managed to delete and copy the new file.
i would try to delete in safe-mode. and copy the new one also.
Safe-mode doesn’t work either!
i have quartz.dll-files at 4 different locations with different sizes and file-dates.
so what should we do with all those files. replace them all?
so what is the conclusion...it works or not!!!!
I didint work for me:/
sorry iam stupid
where is c:windowssystem
At the beginning I couldn’t delete it either under c:\windows\system32\ but it worked for me this way. Cut (Ctrl+X) original quartz.dll and paste it(Ctrl+V) elsewhere. After that just get quartz.dll you downloaded and paste it into system32 and no error message anymore;)
Thanks Allurus.
How to register it? Click on Start > Run... > and type regsvr32 quartz.dll
In the end, you should receive a message saying that your file was succesfully installed.
Goto to the link below for a full expplanation:
