I’ve recently aquired a movie in the form of a massive (2Gb) mdf file, and a small (5k) .mds file.

Any idea what these are and how I go about playing them? A search of google just brings up loads of references to crappy furniture made out of fake wood!

Thanks in advance reply

answering my own question - I’ve since discovered that .MDF files are image files for a program called Alcohol-120% used to rip DVDs.

A .MDF is a CD image file for Alcohol 120% as said by Sofad.

You can play it by either mounting the image using Alcohol 120% then play it with your media player, or perhaps VideoLAN (www.videolan.org) could play it as it is, but you might need to change the file extension for that to work. That’s assuming this CD image has a video file of some sort.

The CD image could actually be of a game etc. reply

if the .mdf file IS a game, how do you run the game? reply

To play the game you would use an emulator such as ePSXe for PSX games. reply

i have no idea thunderaiden. the guys in this forum are infuriatingly vague. apparently a psx emulator will work! but somehow i doubt it. reply

Ok, I don’t see how we were being vague, but I guess I’ll summarize it for you since you can’t connect the dots.

1-If it’s a .mdf file of a Playstation game, mount it into Alchohol 120%. A .mdf file is an image file, much like a ISO or BIN/CUE.

2-Download a Playstation emulator such as ePSXe along with all required plugins.

3-Choose to run the game from the virtual drive you mounted with Alchohol by choosing “RUN CDROM” from the ePSXe menu.

It’s just that simple !:). reply

this is for those of you who are tryying to play the “pc final fantasy 8” what you have to do with the mdf file is turn it into an “Iso” file. You can do this by downloading the MagicIso and use it to convert the MDF files into Iso after doing so save the extraction to a new folder. “IT is important that you save it to another folder” from there you can access the setup.exe for the FF8 for Pc and it is as simple as that. sorry new at this MDF stuff so I can’t really explain well but if you have problem post a note and i’ll come back to read it the links for the magicIso is http://www.magiciso.com/Setup_MagicISO.exe I might not know much about what i’m talking about but i got my FF8 Pc version to work ENJOY!!!! and someone said they have all four disc if you can can you compress it and send it to me i have only disc one right now THank YOU much!!!! reply

I figured it out just burn them all to CD and install and play them from your first drive letter CD-rom. reply

You should be able to play FFVIII by mounting the mdf image into alchohol 120%. FFVIII uses windows registry to store the location (Drive letter) where the discs should be found when you try to play it. It is usually set to the drive you intall the game from. If you installed the game with a disc and then tried playing with mounted images, it wont work because they have different drive letters. Even if you installed of an image you should check the registry just to be sure.

Instructions for those who dont know how....
If you click on windows startmenu there should be a run command. click on it and type “regedit” press enter. The path you want to follow is “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Square Soft Inc\FinalFantasyVIII\1.00” When you get there you should see a data field labeled “Data Drive” change the letter in the data field to the drive letter you want to play off.

If this doesnt work then it is possible that you (whoever) recorded the image with the wrong settings and it didnt get past the software protection. Then you would need a new image. reply

More clearly:

registry path...
“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Software - SquareSoftInc - FinalFantasyVIII - 1.00”

Edit...
DataDrive = “whatever drive letter you want to play FFVIII with, it doesnt matter if its a CD or mounted image."

Example...
DataDrive = e:

NOTE: you need the colon reply

You an alos open the image in WinISO and convert it to another Burnable-to-CD format (ISO or BIN) or just extract it to your hard drive

If the .mdf file is a software, you can use WinIso to open it and to convert it as an .ISO file, so you can burn with Nero or Roxio etc. reply

this is all much more helpful. Many thanks! reply
