Why do people invent crap like .mkv, this is the most annoying, piece of crap file extension I’ve ever used. I wish people would stick with what worked. Now I have to download crap programs, like core media player, which can’t even play audio in the movies I watch. It’s awesome downloading for a few days just so I can delete it when I find out its .mkv. If anyone knows the secret to getting sound to play with .mkv, feel free to tell me. reply

Ocelot,i’m sorry but i just crapped on you....been a while since i was here :D,oi Christian ;) ...well ,first of all ,do something in that lame seat,it isn’t that much of a work-out sitting there and trying stuff instead of always depending of others like a dog begging for a candy.
When i had my first .mkv file i didn’t even knew forums excited ,that was some time ago hehe...and i managed to play it...after a few months ROFL.
.mkv is not a codec,i think that has been explained in the past ,it’s a multimediacontainer, you should carefully read what’s on Matroska’s homepage,if you read everything first so at least you understand everything a bit better before coming to crap on things.
my comp plays EVEYTHING with just one player...and a few extra codecs ;p...
For example .mkv files, this is used so you can put everything in ONE file ,all subs ,extra audio languages etc...that is what .mkv does ,instead like a DVD you would have to download a dozen of files to get all those extra’s...and then hoping you can play it.
and for vtectime....i use Mediaplayer classic, with the splitters and ffdshow ,look at downloads at the matroska webpage, there you find everything(latest zoomplayer prolly installed most of em for you)also a good player btw .
using MPClassic ,right-click the window and tadaaa everything you can wish for ,all subs ,audio etc....
But ...why changing the original jap audio to english, use the english subs ,much better result and it keeps that extra ;)....it’s like watching Rambo dubbed in French lol

Have fun every1 =) reply

@ vtectime :

If you are using Zoomplayer for your MKVs, i assume you have Haali DirectShow Mediasplitter installed ? If so, you will see a green symbol in the bottom right corner of your desktop, being the Haali Mediasplitter icon. Make a right click on it, and you can select your audio languages.

@ Ocelot :

You reaction is only human. I expect the people living around Gottlieb Daimler must have reacted exactly the same, when he was riding out with his 'motorwagon' the first time.

For playing MKVs, the excellent VLC player from http://videolan.org has most codecs built in, and will play 95% of all MKVs out there. Only Realvideo (RV9) video streams and Realaudio (RA8/9) audio streams are not supported and must be played with any DirectShow player and Haali Splitter and Realalternative installed.

@ killaA : This MKV is very likely a High Definition HD-TV rip with h.264 (AVC) compression, requiring at least an Athlon XP 3600 or the like for flawless playback.

Your last hope is the famous CoreAVC DirectShow filter, requiring about 30% less CPU power for video decoding that ffmpeg (ffdshow). Problem is, its not free anymore because they guys were forced to pay license fees to the MPEG consortium. Alternatively, try the great VLC player from http://videolan.org , as its not DirectShow based it will sometimes be the tiny bit faster than other ffmpeg based players.

Hi. Just got my mkv files working with zoom player but I have a question. The video is with 5.1 track, but I have stereo. With VLC player you can go to the audio menu->audio device->5.1 If I don’t do that I can’t hear some of the backround sounds. So even thouhg I have setero I can still switch in 5.1 sound and I can hear everything. Unfortunately VLC player won’t play my kv files.
My question: How do you set 5.1 sound with zoom player? reply

I downloaded some anime cartoons and found they were mkv files. For that i downloaded zoom player. But problem is that its not as smooth playing - its slow and stops the video every 10 seconds. Why is this? Also - I tried downloading vlc but only aduio would work - no video. Why? Please help! reply

@ Karl554321 :

Zoomplayer is a DirectShow based player, meaning that the playback decoder chain is created on DirectShow, with only some possible influence from the player which is launching the chain (in your case Zoomplayer).

The setting you want to do is therefore in the audio decoder filter which is being used for the audio track in your MKV, not in Zoomplayer itself. Zoomplayer will allow you to view the filters which are used in your decoder chain, so that you can identify which audio decoder filter is used. Unfortunately, not all audio decoders will allow you to set the preferred channel output, but for sure the ffdshow-audio filter will do so. There are also special filters for this job, so-called 'audio channel downmixer filters', which you can try to force into the DirectShow playback graph, like Trombettworks http://www.trombettworks.com/directshow.php from Gabriele Trombetti.

@ crimsonstallion :

If VLC will not play these MKV, or only audio, they will likely contain Realvideo (RV9/10) or ON2 VP7 video compression. Zoomplayer should be able to play those fine, if Haali mediasplitter and a suitable decoder filter for those video compressors, say RealAlternative for Realvideo and the On2 decoder for ON2 VP7.
No idea why its stuttering, what decoder filters do you see in Zoomplayer in your playback graph ?

Hi, I’m using Media Player classic 6.4.9.0 (not the most updated one), and it works on the MKV files.

Funny thing is that: my friend installed the newest version and he cannot play the mkv files. SoI guess in case for certainty, you may download the version I used.

Hope it works on your computer! reply

mpc (Media Player Classic) is DirectShow based and can only play MKVs if the right DShow decoder filters are installed. Google for CCCP pack and install it, and even the latest MPC will play MKVs fine.
