'First element is not EBML' means file is corrupted or only partially downloaded.

I found a website that tells you how to convert .mkv to .avi

http://www.riverpast.com/en/support/tutorials/convert/mkv/avi.php

you have to download some things first but I would guess once you convert the file you can delete all the other stuff

:sigh:

Great. All the experts who, for the first time in their life, manage to play a media file on their own, but give advice to other people.

Nice, but pointless.

Once again :

matroska has been invented to OVERCOME THE LIMITATIONS OF AVI !!!!!

Everybody should understand, that for this very reason its in most cases impossible, to convert a MKV file into an AVI file. At least if

- the use of MKV made sense in the first place. If i make a movie without subs, and containing a XviD video track plus a MP3 audio track, why should i consider using MKV ? This movie can well be put into AVI. Anyhow, if you have such a MKV, Riverpast (or maybe better avi-mux GUI) can convert it into an AVI.

- most MKVs use, means those that dont fall into the category mentioned above, contain much advanced video and audio streams, which are INCOMPATIBLE with good old AVI. No tool on this planet can convert such a MKV into an AVI, at least not without the time consuming and quality degrading process of reencoding one or all of them into a AVI compatible format. The best tool to do that, that i found, is all-to-avi.

@ Jarek :

If VLC 0.8.4 (make sure you have the VERY latest version) doesnt work for this file, then its probably bad. It would be nice of you guys if you could understand that we are unable to take responsibility for every MKV file out there.

MKV is not a format, its a container. It allows people to throw almost any audio, video and subtitles stream in it, and to play it in sync. If some people are doing experimental files with extremely high HD-TV resolution that can only be played with the latest dual core processors, and then stuff that into a MKV file, this is not our responsibility.

Try this player here, as a last measure : http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/

Get the 'Windows Desktop' version and the ffmpeg plugin from the same page. It has been developed for portable devices like Palms and PocketPCs, and is definitely the fastest player out there.
There is an even faster h.264 (AVC) plugin for it called 'avc.plg' , based on the great CoreAVC decoder library, but the guys had to remove it from the web for licensing reasons. Google or ED2k can be your friends here.
If the file will contain AAC audio also, you also need 'aac.plg' for the audio decoding.

Your argument about being able to play 1080 i files doesn’t hold, because these files are using MPEG2 video compression instead of h.264 (AVC), being MUCH easier on the CPU for playback.

@ icy hotpatch

We do have about 2.8 Million downloads of the matroska playback pack on http://packs.matroska.org , and we get very little complaints. On some forums our pack is recommended even for non-MKV files.

If even VLC 0.8.4 from videolan.org doesnt work for you, your Windows installation must be completely screwed. Did you have chance to test the files on any other PC ?

P.S. I’m in the US on bussiness for the time being. I have no problems trying to help people here, but please bear in mind i don’t owe you anything. I am doing this here in my free time, on my free will.

Comments like 'this is pissing me off' 'matroska sucks' or 'this is not a good format because this guy doesn’t reply to my questions' will certainly not motivate me to continue supporting you guys here. Got that ?? reply

I thought the point of mkv was that you can choose different audio tracks and select subtitles on or off, so why do people bother uploading regular videos with one audio track, when they could just make it into an avi which EVERY media player can play without having to download yet more stoopid codecs and filters and all kinds of crap...?
just a thought. reply

@ Gay Bastard :

I fully agree with you. But please accept we can not control how people are using our container, and what they are using it for.
And at least in one case we know of people using MKV as their favourite distribution container to only avoid that everybody can easily make a DVD from it, using Nero and other tools with direct AVI support.

After all, its your decision to not downloading MKVs, if you don’t want to bother with MKV filters etc., and search for an AVI release of the same movie.

P.S. There is one point you forgot to mention, why MKV could be used, even with only one audio track and no subs involved : anime with changing framerates within the same movie, which isn’t supported by AVI at all. reply

Hey, I’m using the TCMP player for .mkv files. It works alright but when i open a file it says “MPEG4 AAC Audio decoder not included! It was removed from the official install package because of intellectual property considerations." Then the file plays but with no sound or subtitles... Can somebody tell me how to fix this problem?
Oh, I’ve downloaded CoreAAC Codec or decoder or something that MatroskaDiag said I should get for the sound, but still nothing... reply

I had a giant headache getting my mkv files to play right, and have the sound and video actually in sync...but i have an older comp, 733 mhz, with 512 ram...so it was a little more complicated. I highly recomend using windows media player classic with the matroska codec pack...but take out the splitter/switch when you install. Instead use morgans stream switcher. Something about the matroska switch made my audio go too fast for the video, and that’s about all you should need. The matroska pack is great minus the switch. I forget the website for the switch, but you should be able to google it. and for the pack just go to www.matroska.org, and to the downloads section. reply
