Hi,

I’ve read this thread and I have a problem with my mkv movie, but the solution isn’t given in the thread.

I have a big mkv movie from 7,93 gig.
I have the latest Haali splitter en VLC player.
When I play the fle in VLC I get the first minute. Plays smooth. Then it crashes.
In WMP player it has a lag but i can see the whole movie.
I installed the latest full pack matroska but then I suddenly can’t play the movie in WMP. VLC keeps crashing.
When I install the latest Haali splitter i can play the whole movie in WMP without subs and with a lot of lag.

Someone knows the problem.

The videofile is called:

@ Straetmans :

This file is a HDTV sample file with h.264 (AVC) encoding, you will need a Athlon64 3400 to play it in real time with WMP.

Try this one : http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/tcpmp.win32.0.71h.zip

Its a win32 compile of the famous TCPMP player for portable units, it contains the fastest h.264 decoder available. For the AAC plugin, google for 'aac.plg' .

Alternatively read here http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=104277&highlight=coreavc about the CoreAVC DirectShow decoder, which is based on the fast TCPMP decoder and will maybe help WMP to be fast enough.

Starnge thing also is that the sample of the movie which is 1 minute plays very smooth at VLC. reply

It’s called like that or do you mean .mkv ==> .MKV
I found the AVC codec:) in google cache
It runs very smooth in WMP now.
I have a P4 3,2ghz

Is it also possible that Videolan uses the AVC codec? Because i can’t scroll in videolan with the movie, but in WMP I can, but in WMP I can’t select the subtitles.

Thanks for your help Christian. reply

VLC (Videolan) is using a built in decoder based on FFMPEG for h.264 (AVC) decoding, so you cant change anything about that. VLC does have a special codec/plugin API, but there are only very few such plugins existing, as VLC’s decoder library is almost complete.

This was also the reason why it was faster in the beginning (before you were using the extremely fast CoreAVC DirectShow decoder filter with WMP), because the built-in decoder library is generally faster than using an external codec.

About showing subtitles with WMP, make sure to

- have the latest vsfilter (formerly DirectVobSub) subtitles decoder filter installed, from http://sf.net/projects/guliverkli

- use a lean DShow player (not WMP 8/9/10) like good old WMP 6.4 (search for mplayer2.exe on your c-drive) or even better Mediaplayer Classic (MPC), also from the Guliverkli page above. Other Alternatives to try are TCMP http://corecoded.com , Bsplayer or Zoomplayer http://www.inmatrix.com . In any case, it has to be a DirectShow based player !

I downloaded MPC and put in the MPC almost all the splitters and codecs in it. It plays LOTR ROTK now. Only I don;t understand how to use svfilter. Can’t find a option to enable the subs and to schoose which one I want to enable. Is it also possible to use .srt subtitles. ( That;s why I wanted to play the movie in Videolan. reply

If the Haali splitter is installed and used, and not the MPC internal splitter, you will see a matroska tray icon in the bottom right corner of your desktop.

Right click on it, and select the subtitles track you want. And yes, MKV supports

- SRT
- SSA
- ASS
- vobsubs
- USF

as subtitles.

Christian

Oke
I get the tray icon. I can select the subtitles ( dif. languages ) But they won’t display so I think the subs are corrupt.

Is there also a other way to display .srt files with MPC without the use of Haali Splitter ( So when you play a WMV file you can select .srt subtitles? ) reply

Strange. This file should play fine, according to matroskadiag ? You say you are using BSplayer. In former times, with older versions of BSplayer, it was reported to us that we had the problem that the internal subtitles renderer of BSplayer was incapable of handling MKV embedded subs. I don’t know if this has ever been solved, i last used BSplayer 3 years ago.

Try another player, like MPC (Mediaplayer Classic), or good old WMP 6.4 (search for mplayer2.exe on your c-drive). Zoomplayer should also work.

hi ur right .. it works in vlc just fine
just i prefer the bsplayer for some reason ... i cant never figure out how to get other players to do what i want it to do like bsplayer

ive got version Bsplayer 1.37 build 826 which was released on 11 Dec 2005 reply

VLC is a self contained player and has nothing to do with DirectShow, so matroskadiag has no relevance to it. DirectShow based players are

- BSplayer
- MPC (Mediaplayer Classic ; but has own filters in it)
- Zoomplayer
- all WMP’s
- TCMP The Core Mediaplayer

If you insist on using BSplayer, try to deactivate its built-in subtitles renderer in the settings.
