Problem with splitting huge mpeg file

posted in Encoding

I wanted to record the election coverage this year for posterity, so I started recording from about 11 AM Tuesday till Wednesday night. I ended up with an mpeg-1 file of about 61 GB (65.3 GiB) (I wanted to make sure I’d have good quality, so I didn’t do any in-line encoding). I was going to convert this into Xvid with Virtualdub, but it hung and never actually fully loaded it. I then tried several mpeg splitters, none of which worked (one did seem to work for a bit, but it split the first half of the first section, but then exited with an error).

So, to make a long story short, does anyone know of a good tool to either convert or split a 61 GB mpeg file? If it would help, I could go ahead and upgrade my RAM to 768 (currently 384). Thanks a lot for your help! reply

Use the simple mpeg tools in tmpgenc. Go to file, simple mpeg tools, then pick the merge & cut tab.

Thanks for the reply, but tmpgenc crashed on me as well. I found HJ-Split (www.freebyte.com/hjsplit), which did the job well (and very speedy to boot). So now it’s all good :). reply

Ever heard Brorsoft Video Converter, it not only can do video conversion like MPEG to MP4, MPEG to AVI, AVI to MKV, MKV to MOV, it can also help you split a large video file with its bulit-in Split function: split by file count; split by file length, split by file size. reply

I did try Brorsoft before but it failed to handle my MXF footages, therefore I turned to Pavtube MXF MultiMixer, it works excellently. reply
