I had the same problem with Quicktime 7 pro (windows) audio but no picture when playing mov files. Best thing to do is get rid of quicktime and download vlc player. I did and no longer have any problem playing mov. files. You can download it here and it should fix your problem. http://vlc.us.com/best-media-player/vlc-media-player-y.php?brand=vlc.us.com&s=msn&c=vlcuscom_bm2_bingadm_CS_PG_XB_WB_AT_SK&k={keywords}&pk=56-3 reply

Hey, I had the same problem with a movie I was trying to play, and I fixed the problem by clicking edit/preferences/quick time preferences/update, and updating my software. It worked right away. Might wanna try that. reply

HandBrake was the solution for me.
I was tring to view MOV files on my Win7 pc and whilst the VLC Player worked, the video frames were always plaing catch up with the sound.

With Handbrake I immediately was able to encode the MOV into MP4 and bingo! No visible loss in quality using default settings and the real bonus is that the file size is dramatically reduced. Hope this helps reply

Trying to tansfer video from my JVC camera into Adobe Premiere Pro and got missing codec error over and over. So
after two days of poking around trying 'free' fixes that didn’t work and a REAL desire NOT to spend $130 on Calibrated’s codec (which fixed the problem immediately in demo mode), I downloaded Handbrake and it was amazingly fast and simple to transfer my .mov files into mp4s and open them up in my Adobe Premiere. I found VLC too convoluted for what I am trying to do although if you just want to play things and not edit them its fine. Handbrake was a simple click and done. Quick too! I do have a friend with FCP, so I will try getting the codec from him as well so as to not have to transfer files and see if that works. But in the meantime...Handbrake is awesome for this fix. Thanks for the recommendation whoever first posted!! reply

Open your QuickTime control panel (either via the Control panels, or by going “Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences” in the Quicktime Player).

In the Advanced tab, uncheck Enable Direct3D video acceleration:

Click OK.
Quit and restart the QuickTime Player prior to checking to see if the settings change has had any effect.

Okay - Here is a solution to the problem that will do a quick and totally lossless conversion that enables you to play and edit HDV .mov files. You will need two free applications:
VLC Media Player
and
Super Video Converter: www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.htm
Download and install Super (this is a bit of a process as there are a thousand screens to go through to get to the link) avoid the unnecessary additional installs that come with Super - trust me this is a valuable app that I use all the time.
1 - Open your .mov file in Super
2 - Select “MPG” as the output container
3 - Select “Stream Copy” for both the video and audio
4 - Press the “Encode (Active Files)" button
After a few seconds you should now have a HDV encoded video file wrapped in a MPG container that will play in VLC, Premiere and AfterEffects.
Ha Ha - sucks to you Apple!

We are all having the same problem because those greedy bastards at Apple have once again, made anything that goes through their stuff proprietary, they want 1000 bucks (double what is should be) for Final cut so you can play YOUR movies. Apple is a sham reply

I have QuickTime 7.7 on a PC running Win 7 64-bit; a friend sent me a .mov file for a project we’re working on together. I can’t get it to play in QT - can hear the audio just fine.
Have tried changing the preferences in QT as per several suggestions in this thread. None of them work.
Downloaded the VLC player - same deal - audio but no video.
The first time I tried to play it in QT, a message came up that said I needed an additional codec, but it didn’t say which one, so when I clicked on the link to QuickTime codecs, I was mystified.
Now, when I open that file and try to play it, that message doesn’t show up. I’m still getting audio only.
Same thing happens in Windows Media Player - only audio, no video.
Would appreciate any ideas - thanks! reply

same problem
the mac made .mov i exported to my apple formatted external with the box check that said self contained, as well, would not play with quicktime and upon initially attempting to open with quicktime it led me to a site where i downloaded divx codecs and player. so the second time I opened it with quicktime on a pc, just seems to freeze. So I try vlc on yet another pc, allow it to update. I however got same error with both versions pasted just below and get the audio with no picture. help please

No suitable decoder module:
VLC does not support the audio or video format “icod”. Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
