How to Enjoy DVD Movies on Nokia N900?

posted in Encoding

Get rid of the aging image of Symbian system, running the new open, Linux-based and intuitive Maemo OS, Nokia N900, a popular model in Nokia N-series, is designed to serve the needs of the multimedia hungry mobile phone user. The huge 3.5-inch touch-screen with 800 x 480-pixel resolution is capable of displaying up to 16 million colors. And it’s also equipped with impressive 32GB internal memory (expandable to 48GB via microSD cards). With the TFT resistive screen and large memory, N900 ensures perfect movie appreciation experience anytime anywhere.

Believe it or not, the best movies source is still from DVD disc. Since mobile phones only supports limited video formats while DVD is not included and DVD cannot be ripped that simply, here we are going to talk about how to convert DVD to Nokia N-series video with ease.

First things first, try to find some third party software for ripping movie source from DVDs. There are a lot similar products in the market, however not many of them can both rip DVD to video in desired format and dimension. To correctly and perfectly play movies in mobile, you need the movies’ resolution, bit rate, and other properties to be suitable for your cell phone, so we’d better choose one program supporting mobile device, especially Nokia N900. We like Sothink DVD Ripper best. Unlike some trial software, there is no quality loss or watermark in the output movie.
The full version is $34.95, not the cheapest one in the market. However, it not only offers profiles for ripping DVD to MP4/WMV/Real Video/AVI/XviD/DivX and all video formats supported by Nokia N900 and other Nokia N-series, it also pre-sets properties for many other video formats, mobile phones and media devices. It is all-in-one and cost effective.

After picking out your DVD ripping software, install it and put your source DVD disc in your PC drive or store your DVD folder in PC directly. Launch Sothink DVD Ripper, and click button “Open DVD” to import the DVD movies you want to enjoy on your Nokia. (You’ll find all DVD titles are listed in the program and have been ticked, except the ones shorter than 10 seconds. By default, it will hide and ignore the DVD titles shorter than 10 sec, which is for helping you jump over some advertisement or other unnecessary clips in your movies.) Go to the left panel and select target profile, like ripping DVD to Nokia N-series. (Navigate to “Mobile Phone Video” in the drop down menu). Once you choose a profile configured for some device, it will automatically set all video and audio properties and parameters, such as dimension, bit rate, frame rate, zoom mode, aspect ratio, and so on, for the most appropriate. And then, click button “Rip DVD”.

A few minutes later, you can find the converted movies in the output folder. Once you’ve ripped the DVD movies to PC, connect your phone with your PC, copy the movies and transfer them into N 900.

Be aware that this method also works with Nokia N-series, including Nokia N8, N97, N97 mini, N86, N96, N85, N79, N82, N95, and more. If you prefer to use Nokia PC Suite to do the converting and transferring work, you may use the DVD ripper to convert DVD to PC and then complete the job with your familiar Nokia PC Suite. reply
