You are such an asshole. Why can’t you just help the guy without being a jerk? I am positive that sometime in your life, someone was helpful to you. Now, you are just trying to act like some Godlike figure telling people off. You really are a “big pussy”!
Get “Format Factory” for pc, it’s far better and quicker. Also free.
If using Mac, Videora has been best.

Hey, anyone know how I can convert all my videos to MKV so anyone who wants to use them would have to be or become an alcoholic first?
Really folks, if anyone is making torrents or anything, no matter how “nice” or how “handy” this file format is for something, please avoid it like the plague.
I think it started out as someones joke to pass around and make everyone turn their videos into encrypted non-usable files, then someone accidentally broke the code?
I’ve tried everyone’s solutions, and nothing is really stable or certain. And while I’m sure some get a kick out of this and use it to call others (like myself) stupid because we don’t want to waste three weeks converting a file, I think it’s those people who have done so that have been taken on a trip down fools lane.
Not a name calling remark, just a fact that we are having this unnecessary garbage thrown at us under the guise of someone’s “new great idea or solution?" When someone can actually post a feasible, step by step “make sense” “proven” solution to recoding an MKV file to an AVI or ANYTHING ELSE, there is a whole lot of us just DYING (literally) to use it so we too can defend the greatness of MKV.
MKV = “Masterfully Knuckleheaded Videos"

Most players, especially Media Player will do that. And once your computer has assigned a codec to a file, you can change it to almost any video codec and it will play.
Besides this doesn’t answer the original question which many of us are still waiting for. HOW do you split an MKV, or recode it so you can edit it and burn a DVD? Even crap NERO 9 won;t touch an MKV file. VLC plays them great. But it doesn’t give a solution to this container MKV of MKV. Has anyone tried to find a solution maybe using 7zip or something and just unpacking the container and splitting it back to its three original files?
I just wanna change my MKV to Avi so it streams faster onto my 360. MKV isnt supported by 360, so it has to be converted on the fly which takes ages. Need them to become .avi so they can just stream. Any help?
Yes, you are right

Hello guys, why I cannot merge my files after extract with MKVExtractGUI with AVIMuxGUI? It receive both audio and subtitle but the video didn’t. It says that it didn’t accept this type of file.
what i use is brorsoft MKV converter which is easy and fast to use.
i like brorsoft because the following reasons:
1)it can convert MKV to almost all other video formats, like avi,mp4,wov,mav,tod,mod,hd,vob,acc,flac,acf and so on.
2)it has wonderful editing functions such as crop, trim, watermark with text, image and special effects.

FxF,
Certain containers cannot contain certain video formats as they are incompatible.
Your best bet would be to transcode the video into something like Xvid so it can be used within an AVI container.
Mkv files are awsome and there is no need to convert them because they play on most devices anyways. Im trying to covert my avi files to mkv. Does anybody know how to do that?
wow I just ralized that no one has posted since 2004, google sucks!
Try Convert-tune
works good for me

For those who are frustrated with trying to figure out which files to extract and download and remix, etc. Here’s an easy way. Install the CCCP (Combined Community Codec Pack)from the Matroska website listed below.

Windows Media might give you an error saying it doesn’t recognize the file when you try to play it, but if you select play anyway it really does work.
If you want to convert to an .avi or another file extension. Try a program called WinAVI Video Converter. It can convert all sorts of video files (including matroska and realplayer). There are several advanced options for audio and subtitles as well. I’ve been using it for a few months and it hasn’t done me wrong yet. I got it from the following site.

Hope this works for you too!

What a stupid format! I dont understand why used many idots this shit mkv format. FUCK you mkv guys!!!!!
Vuze does it for free.. no watermarks or registration
just 'transcode' to one of the Devices that it supports for playback (Itunes, Xbox, PS3, whatever..) Look in the filesystem for the converted files (mp4 for Xbox360, etc.. you can right click on the transoded file within Vuze to pull it up in Explorer)
Vuze is awesome
hi this so good , but i found this software {audio converter extractor max} , and found it on this site http://www.softwaremile.com
i can extract all my audio cd’s , and can convert it in the same time ,i can convert any video and audio files also
.mkv and .avi are technically not formats but containers.
You can extract the contents of an mkv with mkvextract which is part of the mkvtoolnix package at
http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/downloads.html
As for muxing it into an .avi container, this is somewhat tricky as .avi may not support either the audio or the video, but really won’t support the subtitles and chapter marks.

or
http://sourceforge.net/projects/megui/
I’ve used meGUI and it supports hard coding the subtitles if you really need them.
