But I don’t want to watch them on my computer with VLC media player. I want to watch them on my popcorn hour with limited disk space. MKV’s are like many gigs in size and I don’t want to go through reinventing the file from its component atoms to convert a simple video file. VLC is already decoding the video I want to watch and the audio I want to watch why is there not an option to simply stream what I am seeing and what I am hearing into an AVI file that would probably be smaller and if not I can reconvert an AVI two more times if needed typically with little loss of quality because AVI is that good. Not knocking MKV its probably GREAT for someone but for my taste and uses MKV is huge choppy and ginormous and did I mention choppy?. reply

Now im not the brightest bulb in the lamp but ive just done this and it was easyr than i thought,
Here goes,
Install the Matroska full pack and run,
then install mkvmerge gui,
then install mkvtoolnix in the same folder,
in the tools there is a programme to extract the chosen files, extract to the same folder then use mkvmerge to merge the two streams together,
then simply rename the file .avi.
It truly is as simple as that, honest ive just done it and it works.

For Windows Wista:
1. Make a copy of your xxx.MKV file. Rename the copy file to xxxcopy1.avi. Dont mind any warnings of data loss.
2. Import the xxxcopy1.avi file to Windows Wista Movie Maker.
3. Publish the xxxcopy1.avi file to xxx2.avi
4. Import the new xxx2.avi file to Windows Vista Movie Maker.
5. Publish the xxx2.avi to xxx.wmv
6. Operations done with reduction in data. reply

@vrattlesnake: What’s useful in this thread?? Apart from the knowledge that VLC plays mkv, there’s no info on how to convert mkv to avi using the new vlc player...

I found this page through google, and still have no idea of how to convert using vlc... anyone knows how to use VLC for this??

BTW, if you like Open Source Software, then you could use Alltoavi program ... download it from here..: http://sourceforge.net/projects/alltoavi/

I have used the program but it takes a lot of memory and time... was hoping I could find an alternative to it in VLC... reply

Found this on VLC forums... quite useful but is not a one step process... needs another tool called Avidemux (another open source, and yes, I’ve tried this too, but for splitting divx, not conversion)...

So I believe that vlc is not the best option for conversion, you could use alltoavi instead. reply

Sorry, completely forgot to link the vlc forums page...:

I dont understand why people made this MKV file in the first place... if it requires this much work to convert it back to AVI file.. why dont they jus make an MKV Player and save us all these time to convert??

(by the way: are there any MKV file players? lol)

EASIEST WAY!!!!

I have 2 codec packs installed. K-lite and media player. Between the both of them, one of them allows me to open in Windows Media Player and I just simply did a <file> <save as> and changed it to .avi... all quality transformed fine. Hope this helps. reply
