Newer versions of Nero (with Nerovision 4 included) will convert AVI (DivX/XviD/mp4) files to VOB.

From the StartSmart interface, choose “Make Your Own DVD-video" reply

To sfdgdfgg:

Doh! This worked! no conversion. Nothing. I’ve been trying for 2 days to find a converter that allows a standard XP PC to automatically play it. I’ve been getting a lot of codec errors. Didn’t even bother to think that simply renaming the extension would actually work. Thanks for the tip.

Sometimes the best solution is the easiest. reply

Handbreak is a good program... you can get it Versiontracker.com. It was easier to use than DiVA, ffmegx, or cleaner6. I used the conversion to mp4 but then you can see it in quicktime and export it as an .mov file from there. the only thing is that it takes forever!!!

Thank you. This was a great help. reply

Hey guys, i have a sony handheld camera, and the shop assistant neglected to tell me that it records to .vob files. So i went out, spend months filming, only to come back and find that most editing software dosnt play or edit the files. I had adobe premeier elements and the original demo let me edit fine, however i re-downloaded it on another computer and it says it dosn’t support the format.

Is it possible to convert the files FOR FREE to a format that can be edited easily?

Thank x reply

ok, i have been going around in circles, ripping my hair out because i keep encountering the same problems:

i am a mac os x user, i need to convert my own recorded material which is in .vob file format to avi (or mpeg- ) so i can edit it in iMovie or Final cut (eventually).
I have downloaded countless converters that are always zips with .exe files which are useless on mac. Is there an easier away i can get around doing this without using some kind of boot camp type program???

please people, im going mad. thank you reply

For Mac Users: How to Convert .VOB movie files into .AVI files.

1) Use “Handbrake” (a free program for converting or ripping)
2)Once open, find .VOB file
3)Under “Output Settings - Custom” select “AVI format” beside “Format:"
4) Right after that below “Format:", there is a string menu that you can select {video}{Audio & Subtitles}{Chapters}{Advanced}....select “Audio and subtitles” now select unknown AC3 (ch. 2.0) and move once to the right (next column) and select AC3.
5)Now select the “Play” button at the top of the screen to start encoding (After a day of trying this was right under my nose and there was not an explanation like this. So hopefully everyone finds this helpful reply
