Here is what I have found. I would test them before making any purchase. Some work better than others I am afraid.

Programs that say they can convert .MOV to .AVI:

QuickTime’s Pro version which costs ($30)
Xilisoft Video Converter ($35) WinMPGVideoConvert v.5.6 ($30)
and WinAVI Video Converter ($30).

You can get them at these Web addresses, respectively:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
http://www.xilisoft.com/video-converter.html
http://www.winmpg.com/
http://www.winavi.com/video-converter.htm reply

To those of you with Kodak cameras that take video in .mov you can easily view your videos with quicktime as these are quicktime movies. At first you might not be able to see the video just audio, but be connected to the internet and quick time will automatically download any new software you need to view the movies. But the real trouble is e-mailing them. Im working on that reply

I too have a Kodak DX6490, and I too have had the same problem as everyone above.

Thanks a million for the RAD Video info. It works for me for the most part.

Most of my movies convert from .mov to .avi flawlessly with a slight decrease in video quality, but I can live with that.

A few of my movies do something I haven’t read in this forum. It converts with the sound just fine but the video is choppy. It’s as if the sound is playing 5X faster than the video.

Still, a few movies convert a high mega movie to less than a MB, shortening the movie.

Can anyone offer any advice for this issue? reply

Dear Dave M.
Thanks so much for your help and software. I recently installed your Riverpast software. It was fast easy and worked like a charm. As a kodak owner it was nearly impossible and extremely time consuming to e-mail any video to family and friends across the country, but with your help I can easily convert my .mov files to wmv files reducing their size by about 85%,making e-mailing them quick and easy for me and my family. I highly recommend your solution to this problem for anybody interested. Dave was fast, friendly and knows what he is talking about. Thanks again Mr. Bill reply

To davemazm,

Thank you soooo much for your River Past download. It works just as you said it would.

I was having the most difficult time using software programs to convert .mov files to .avi. The ones that I was having trouble with, River Past has done the job.

To all out there, overcome your skepticisms and give Dave’s River Past a chance. You will not be disappointed. reply

Thanks so much for the info! I am doing a school project and didn’t want to shell out the $30 dollars just to convert one file and your suggestions worked great! This is what I love about the internet! reply

okay.... i tried many of the suggestions, but whenever i try to open the file, it says cannot find file “Bounce Across 2”. i reinstalled quicktime, because it said something about quicktime not being able to open it, and that didnt work. i cannot open it and use it in: windows media player, quicktime, inter video, interastual, divx, realplayer, and 3 .mov converters Win avi video converter, mov converter, and rad video tools. i dont think there is a problem with the disk, because the disk i have the file on was made at my school. it was made on an apple computer, obviously, and probably created on imovie. my friends with macs can play it, but i cannot on windows. no one on windows i asked has the same problem about the bounce across thing, but they cant play it either. i need to know how to play it, and get the bounce across thing... the cd has pics of my 8th grade year(please, if anyone wants to help, make it understandable to an 8th grader) school ends in 2 days, so i would like responses asap, if its the cd (i wont b able to get another one) reply

What if you try to have one of your friends with the MAC download the software, save it as as a differnet file type, and then you can try to open it? I dont know what else to try if you’ve already converted it. Make sure you have the correct exetension in the file name. reply

I also encountered this problem; first i was converting .mov to .avi using pocket pc divx encoder (for watching clips on my iPaq) and indeed it did not had any sound. I have read somewhere that this is caused because of some security / DRM mechanism in Apples .mov

But i have found a solution, this program is called WinAvi Video Converter, www.winavi.com, and this is doing his job just fine.

so maybe this would be of any help reply
