hey i have a video file off my JVC as well and wonted to play it on WMP so i changed the file extension from .MOD to .MPEG. Now the problem i have is that the video quality is poor. It’s like the video cant keep up with the playing speed, lines drag when something moves. I know this quality is poor because it plays fine on cyberlink power dvd. Any help plz on how to fix the poor quality????

when your editing the video, right click on the clip and select properties, then check the box that says “reduce interlace flicking"learn reply

I figured out how to convert the mod file to mpg files which are readable in media player. You have to rename the file by changing the extension to mpg or whatever format your media player plays.

What fuck, IT CAN’t OPEN FILE reply

If you manually change the file type from .MOD to .MPG, you can play it in Windows Media Player. If you want to change the format to upload it to the web (maybe you need .WMV) use ImTOO MPEG Encoder. It’s a free download that lets you change the format of almost any file type (including .MPG) into almost any other format (given that the clip is less than 5 minutes long). Hope this helps!

This is by far the best advise I have ever been given. Works like a charm!! reply

Thank you so much for your helpful posting. It´s great having people help each other like this. Has anyone been able to solve the problem of sound? I have a canon camcorder. I have renamend the files: from .mov to .avi or . mpg, and I can see the videos, but not hear them. Is there an easy way to solve this problem? Someone said something about downloadind a codec... What is that) ? Does it work for this problem? Sorry for my ignorance... reply

Thank you sooo much!!!
Changing the extention name from .MOD to .AVI and/or .MPG worked.

For those who still have problems:

Click on TOOLS > (then) FOLDER OPTIONS > (tab) VIEW > (unselect) HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES > (click) APPLY > OK... and now try again changing the extension name.

Good luck! reply

Wow. Thanks for the help with this issue. I changed all of the files to .AVI instead of .MOD and they instantly import into PowerDirector! I couldn’t use the command prompt method, but changing the folders to show the entire file name worked. reply

I was having trouble getting the sound to work on a couple of MOD files that I changed the extension for (MPG), and I downloaded the ac3filter and K-lite codec pack. Now the sound plays on the files. Thanks a million to these wonderful forums and people that pass on the good word. reply

I’ve used a panasonic camcorder to get some footage.
I’ve copied it off the camera onto my computer(windows XP). They’re in .mod and the extension is in .moi. I’m trying to open them in Windows Movie Maker but no luck.
I downloaded VLC player because thats supposed to be able to convert it but im not sure how that works?
i tried the renaming thing, but when i try to import it into WMM “An interface has too many methods to fire events from” comes up....
any advice?? reply

If You’re in windows you can rename a file with these steps:
1. Open the explorer window where your files exist
2. Select the Tools >> Folder Options menu item
3. Click the View Tab
4. Uncheck the option to “Hide extensions for known file types”
5. Click “apply to All Folders if you always want to see the file extensions for every file no matter what folder you are in
6. Click ok to accept all changes and close the dialog window
7. You should now see all the file extensions of the files in the current folder
8. Right click on a filename you wish to change and select Rename
9. Rename the file extension to anything you’d like.

Once you’ve done this, you can just right click a file and rename it in seconds. No software required!

Thank you! This helped loads! reply
