"Since matroska (mkv) is a rather exotic format, you will have to do the conversion in two steps. "
BullS**t. Converting mkv to avi alone requires at least 4 steps (demuxing, converting the ac3 to aac, converting the h264 to something more useful and remuxing). Doing this requres 7 separate pieces of software and a degree in computer science is helpful too.
Your “two steps” is at least 5 and are likely to be fraught with problems (video quality loss, out of sync sound, buggy opensource programs not working)

I’m using VLC mediaplayer at this moment. It can convert MKV to OGG, mp4 as well I discovered just a moment ago. It’s streaming on hard-disk right now. Hope it works properly.
MKV looks like rubish. It may please techies, but hey if I cannot play it on ANY dvd player connected to my tv and I cannot convert it to avi without taking an MIT degree - it is not worth anything. I will rather make a note of avoiding these files.
People can anyone come up with or say the easiest way to convert mkv file so that it can be burned on dvd? All this 4 paragraph stuff is a little ridiculous to just convert a file to burn on dvd, its 2010. there has to be one program to do it.
I use Any DVD Converter Professional. I convert it to a .mpg and then the conversion to DVD is fast and easy. Hit me up if you need it! firstname.lastname@example.org
I will recommend you use MKV to DVD software,

first off, I don’t really know too much about HD MKV files and after running a few searches I was still unclear about the best place to post this. If it’s in the wrong forum, my apologies!
I have a Samsung 720p HD TV which I use with the Freeagent Theatre to play HD MKV files.
I know that 700-1400mb is the accepted standard for Divx/Xvid movies. Is there a corresponding standard (or rough comparison) for 720p MKV files?
That is to say, if my system can’t display the bump in quality above 720p and don’t want to waste space looking for higher resolution MKV files than I need... should I be downloading ~4GB MKV movies... or 6-8GB MKV movies?
Try iSharesoft DVD Creator. it allows you burn any format files to a DVD and play it on your DVD player. the movie is quite good with high quality.it plays smoothly.
