HandBrake is popular and free open source video transcoder. It is primarily used for transcoding from DVD/BLURAY or DVD/BLURAY-like sources.
As input it can take VIDEO_TS filders, DVD image, real DVDs or BLURAYs that are UNENCRYPTED, and some .VOB, .TS and .M2TS files. In addition to this it supports more multimedia files (those supported by the libavformat project to read and the libavcodec project to decode).
As output it can produce MP4 and MKV files with video in the MPEG-4, H.264 or Theora formats. It supports a wide variety of audio formats including AAC, MP3, Vorbis, AC3 and DTS (MKV only).
