XP SP2 and Indeo clips (sound but no video)

I just found a solution to a problem I was having and thought it might be useful to some people as I’ve had a hell of a time finding the solution.
In a nutshell, a user was trying to play an AVI through WMP 9. Initially it complained about no Indeo codecs so I installed them. It played audio but no video. I looked around this site and none of the solutions worked for me.
Eventually it turns out that XP SP2 needs Indeo clips to be on local HDD to view video; network drives will not show video, only audio.

I have noticed this too when encoding video from a Logitech Quick Cam, The problem makes itself evident even when playing from a website.

Do you know if Indeo 5.2 Codec resolves this issue?

I have noticed that if you play the video file though mplayer2.exe it’ll play wiht out issue, seems to be inherant problem with WM9 and 10.

my problem is when i play game, it require indeo video playback. but i hear only sound when i play the game idonot saw the video.

Service Pack 2 - With the 2004 update to Windows XP (known as Service Pack 2), Microsoft has made changes to the OS and Windows Media Player 9 and 10 that prohibit the playback of Indeo content online. Users will find that they will no longer be able to automatically play video files posted on the web if they were encoded with the Indeo codec. Windows Media Player will only play Indeo files if they are local (on your hard drive). Questions and comments should be directed to Microsoft through one of their support channels.

I think that it may be ANY compressed avi file that is posted on the web and viewed using WMP run on XP SP2. An uncompressed avi will work but is too big for practical purposes. Annoying isn’t it?
I have tried every security setting on XP SP2 but no joy.

You may have tried this, but in case not: After I installed SP2, no .avi or .mpg files would play on my machine, except using Quicktime. The reason turned out to be because my video settings had been changed (in control panel, display, settings) from my actual monitor and video card (monitor #2) to multiple monitors on a generic video card (monitor #1). The solution was to use the fields and check boxes on the settings tab to switch back to monitor 2, then all was well.

From the info i’ve found Microsoft r restricting indeo by blocking parts of it’s driver codec in sp1 & sp2. I’m trying to encode video w/ Indeo for VJaying w/ resolume, as its supposed to be the best codec for it w/ keyframe edit capabilities. So frustrating trying to solve this, it seems Resolume can only be run optimally by rolling XP back to b4 the service packs.

Forgot to mention in xp sp2 I loaded file into media player classic, then right click to filters & fiddle w/ indeo settings i got to play video, problem is this has to be done every time u load a new video. I know the settings which work in the classic player & thought how can i make these the default for the codec, but don’t know how

Before installing xp sp2 videos worked fine on any media player, after installing sp2 that all changed. Nothing seems to work, doesn’t matter what kind of file it is, the audio will work but the video will not. Does anyone have a solution that works? I have tried the above but no luck.
