If you download AVS DVD Player Free, you can default any extension to it And it will play any extension. I find it will play any extension and it is free.
You can even watch DVD’s on it.
This is the url.

I was totally frustrated, until I found this program.

I found that if you set video acceleration to none, my videos started to play again. Most of the ones I have had trouble with are downloaded video clips. reply

I would just like to thank Noccy for sharing this. I’ve been dealing with this crap for so long now and because I installed the Samsung suite at the same time as upgrading to WMP 11, I assumed it was the latter at fault.

Someone is Samsung needs to get a spanking. reply

The files you’re trying to play are likely mpeg-2, instead of mpeg-1. WMP doesn’t natively decode mpeg-2 files. There’s 3 ways to remedy this 1. Play the file using an alternate player (media player classic (www.gabest.org), videolan (www.videolan.org), and many more... some people say zoom player, bs player, core media player, etc, but I haven’t tested them all). those are free. 2. buy dvd software like windvd or powerdvd - the mpeg-2 file will play seamlessly in windows media player 3. buy an mpeg-2 decoder like the one from elecard/moonlight or other. the file will play in wmp as well.

(to Josh W)
Can you check if the files you’re playing are mpeg-1 or mpeg-2? (Use avicodec). If they’re mpeg-2 could you be using a trial version of some mpeg-2 decoder that just expired? (wild guess) Also sudden stoppage of video playback is often attributed to such things as installing codec packs, video filters (for example nero’s), or video drivers (nvidia beta ones have gotten some posts on our board recently).

(to NOLAZACH)
It’s really difficult to know what’s going on with as many changes as you described on your system. Can you identify the files or types of files that won’t play back? Is it files of a specific extension or codec? (Use diagnostic utilities like avicodec or gspot to help you). Changing drive letters/OS shouldn’t affect playback (unless you can’t even access the files at all - can’t open, move, or delete - in which case you need to take ownership - see http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/4160p1.html)

yeah, reinstalling Power DVD fixed it. Thanks! reply

Yeah, I’m getting the same problem with my MPEG’s not on AVI’s etc just on certain MPEGs i know its not a file corruption as its on more than one video. Just plays 3 seconds of sound then windows media player comes up with a “Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file. For additional assistance, click Web Help." If i leave it up i see hear the music! But no image...

I bought a new computer this summer with vista and WMP 11.

Like lots of other people WMP wouldn’t play mpg. I spent hours researching online without finding a solution untill I stumbled across a solution myself.

HERE’S MY SOULTION

This is going to sound stupid, but I hadn’t played a DVD movie yet on WMP 11. Tonight I happened to play a DVD which worked fine. Then all of a sudden I could start playing my mpg clips!

I can’t believe it was so simple!!! reply
