Hi,

Recently when I have tried to view a video online that runs with Windows Media Player, it always says 'Ready' then Connecting..., and then back to 'Ready' after about 8 seconds. When I click on Play it just does the same thing over again without the video even starting.

This never used to be an issue for me, I only noticed this recently. I get this error message when I right click and choose Error Details:

“Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

Any suggestions as to how I can fix this? Would I need to download some codecs?

Thank you!

It’s hard to find out the codec of a file that you don’t have access to (yours is streaming - not on your hard drive).
Do you know if there’s an options to save the file somewhere? You may have to look in the html source code to find out the direct URL of the file to download it. That won’t work if the file is exclusively streaming (rstp:// or some other protocol like that), though you can still rip it (google for rip streaming video) - though I don’t know if it can’t be done if the file can’t be played back!
Once you successfully download the file, use some of the tools in this thread to find out what codec(s) is/are needed.

There is no option to save any of the videos. The problem only seems to be online videos that run with Windows Media. I can watch other videos that run through other programs just fine.

It’s also not just one video, I have tried multiple sites that play video through Windows Media and it does the same thing.

Is there some sort of Windows Media Player 11 Codec Pack I can download?

Thanks in advance!

I’m not sure what to suggest. How are your Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer (assuming you’re using IE) settings configured?
