Virtual Dub codec problems

I’m trying to open this .avi file in Virtual Dub. It keeps giving me this error message “Couldn’t locate decompressor for format XVID (unknown) Virtual Dub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatable codec to decompress video. Direct Show codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.". Can anyone please help me? I’ve spent two days trying to figure this out.

The version of xvid we host here http://www.moviecodec.com/downloads/8d.html is VfW-compatible. Download it and install it.
